    Default Making my Eureka, Unique

    Hey guys,
I wanted to incorporate some art into my Eureka in the form of some pinstripe design across her bow and along the hull, and thought id consult the masters haha.

Is it ok to paint onto the bare wood and then glass over it? ( i was hoping by doing this it would protect the job) or will the glassing process ruin the pain job. I can paint once its all done, but i was concerned for the pain chipping etc

I'd love to hear your thoughts,
    Mike

Howdy Mike, You can finish varnishing it and use Auto pinstriping on the top.

The boat does have to be painted or varnished over the epoxy anyhow so normal to do painted pinstriping as the last thing.

Or did you have something else in mind?

    Sounds like fun.
    Best wishes

Can you paint then varnish over it to protect the paint?

This was what i had in mind for the art

i plan to put one wing up each side and stretch it back as far as i can with it looking decent. Im only basing my idea off that picture, mine i hope to have more flow and curves for some grace.

As far as my build goes, im up to planing down the second lot of panels before glueing the 2 lots together... space is the big issue at the moment haha and dads not happy

It might give a slight yellow/brown tinge to the paint under because the varnish has a bit of colour. Do most of your varnishing. Then do the stripes and one coat of varnish over the top.

I was messin around today with some drawing and happened to like what i had drawn on the decks of the canoe, i ended up filling it in with a permanent marker (Artline70).

Now i know it SAYS permanent marker, but does anyone know if the varnish would cause it to run or smudge?
i can colour over what ive done in a led pencil as i know lacquer doesnt smudge pencil marks. but id rather keep the deep black colour of the marker.

Thought id ask before i resign to colouring over it again..

Your permanent maker will probably stay put, but it depends on the solvent used in it. The wisest thing to do would be a test, on similar material with the same marker. Use a light coat of varnish initially, to seal the surface, then a few more to get an idea of how the color will end up. Varnish will make a slight change in the color, but it will likely make it look "richer" and deeper black. Make sure the marker is good and dry before applying the varnish. I'll bet it'll be just fine, but test first to be safe.

I've seen the marker bleed and blur with varnish over the top because the solvents in the varnish make some of the components mobile. Do a test as PAR suggests. Give the marker a couple of hours to dry.
