    Default Hobart WBF 2011

I'm starting to think about this already , of taking HS down on a trailer.
Those with experience of the WBF of the past , could you tell me , should I leave her on the trailer for the festival , or plonk her in the water ?.
    Regards Rob J.

Well , the bloke I went sailing with yesterday had his brother and father sail down in an open 'couta boat in '07 I think it was , and around the island .
But they have a tad more experience than I do.
Last I saw his brother he had sailed a yacht from Denmark back to Portland , and had loaded up his family and taken off again.
His father was a professional fisherman .
I'll sail around the island perhaps , because I'd like to be there for a while , but I think I'll be enjoying the trip over and back on the ferry , my name is "Billy" , not "Silly".
    Regards Rob J.

I should say though that the experienced sailors that have been on HS are very impressed with the way she handles open waters.
And I feel very confident with her .
But there are "open waters" , and there are "open waters".
I've only sailed her in up to 35 knot winds , and about 3 metre seas , all I have to do is "go around the corner" , and I can triple the size of the seas for starters.
I'm lernin' , I'm lernin' , but I'm not going to overstep the mark.
In the hands of a competent , experienced sailor , HS could do it , no doubt , but I'm not that competent , or experienced.
    Regards Rob J.

And therein lies your ability to learn and stay safe!

Well , I am learning , and safety is a priority.
Not the least because I'd hate to see HS smacked up , but my coastguard exposure also lets me see how easily people can come unstuck , and the unnecessary risks that are taken.
Anyway , time for another afternoon out on HS , its fairly cool (after the last few days) , with a nice breeze.

Rob J, I trailered a small clinker boat (putt-putt) there in 05, my first time and it went in/out at the yacht squadron (this for WBF entrants) and berthed on one of the pontoons in constitution dock. The boat/trailer went on a separate freight line and me and car went on the ferry. The worst part of the exercise was trying to get some sleep on the ferry.

Fantastic being on the water, all sorts of people want to talk about the boat. Met some very interesting people (and I thought I'd be bored and get some reading done!). All went well until the Port Adelaide mafia abducted me and I was forced to provide tours using my boat and drink strange beverages.

You don't really have to tell anyone that you didn't sail, when someone asks what Bass Strait was like, just purse your lips, hum and shake your head a bit.

Seriously, put your boat in the water there, the atmosphere is great.

    Regards Adrian

Adrian , I was thinking of taking the boat on the trailer behind the tow vehicle on the ferry , the whole shebang , and then explore some , or as much as possible , of Tassie , on the water , before and after the festival.
I'm wondering whether I should leave her on the trailer for the festival , or put her in the water.
To me , there is more to see , with her OUT of the water.
But that is just me , I guess.
    Regards Rob J.
