    Default A hot shed!

    Hi all,
after some advice on wooden boats in hot sheds! My beloved dinghy lives in my shed, which is already starting to get hot. In summer, if it reaches 40 degrees outside, I'm sure its 50 in the shed. On a warm day the boat is physically warm to touch in there already and its only October.

My boat is glued clinker ply with the usual varnished Mahogany thwarts etc, orgegan mast, boom etc.

And so, Is it safe to keep my dinghy in a hot shed. I guess the wood should not dry out to much since its either epoxy and paint coated, or varnished ??? I'm not wanting to take any chances with this boat, because I'm hoping it will stay in the family for a long long time...

Epoxy encapsulated wood will remain fairly stable at 50c, but varnished and painted wood will not, it'll dry out and shrink up like crazy, depending on ambient humidity. This can cause joints to tear apart, so every effort should be made to lower the shed temperatures as best as you can. A small box fan can lower the temperature enough, to prevent these high temperatures from hurting anything.

    paint the shed roof white.
For a demo of why, find a small piece of corro & paint 1 sq ft of it white.
put in the sun for a while with the paint towards the sun.
touch the painted vs the unpainted bits & compare temps.
Think about what that means for temps inside the shed.

WARNING: after doing this you will probably want to trade your (any) coloured
car for a white one... (unless you live north or south of about 40degrees latitiude)

    cheers
    AJ
