Default Be Kind To Me, I'm New!!!

Hi Guys, have just joined and thought I would introduce myself. My names Pete and more importantly I am the owner of a 1950's 42' Ex Trawler. I have attached a few pics below showing the boat when we got her approx 12mths ago and the work we have had done so far. The decision was made early to have the external work done by the professionals so she was not out of the water for too long. As it was, she was out for 4mths. Now we have the inside to fitout. Look forward to discussing options with fellow boat lovers. Please forgive my photo's if they are a bit #####, having trouble working out how to shrink them.

    A nice looking trawler Salted!

The conversion looks very attractive - assuming that she isn't too "roly-poly"

What sort of machinery is there (or planned to be) in terms of propulsion, gear & screw, genset, watermaker, etc?

    Is she SSDY or TSDY?

I'm not up on Aus Maritime requirements, so is a secondary propulsion mechanism required?

Also (sorry to be a pest!), what operator/skipper licensing requirements need to be met?

    Cheers

    Hi Steve,

We are not really sure on the rolly poly side of things yet, she has a 16' beam and only draws about 4.5 feet. Under way she is fine but future stabilizers may be required for sitting at anchor. Still a bit more weight to go up top yet (dinghy, fridge/freezer, BBQ) but no where near what it would have had as a trawler. Using mainly for Moreton Bay but may want to head up north in the future. Have not put control station up top, but have the option with the auto pilot to have toggle steering, just using this area for get togethers with friends. Still have the railings and bimini to go up as well.

She is single screw and has an old Leyland EO401 straight six 135hp diesel matched to a Paragon 2.5:1 gearbox which spins a 4 bladed bronze LH 24.5" prop. The genset we are yet to install is a 5.5Kva diesel cheapie import job, same as tradetools sell. It will be mainly used for charging as most equipment is/will be 24V except for the eutectic fridge freezer going up top. No watermaker plans as yet, she holds 1500ltrs of water over 4 tanks. Fuel is about the same in 2 tanks.

No second propulsion is required as far as I am aware for a private vessel of this size. As this is a private vessel, you only require a Recreational Marine Drivers License to operate.

    Thanks for asking,
    Pete

Thanks Dingo for your kindness in blessing my first thread with your talented wordsmith skills. After reading around this forum prior to joining, I would had been extremely dissapointed if you had not

has kindly offered to assist me in shrinking down some pics, so the boat as you guys put it will be on shortly.

I have no problem with rag and stick lovers, my only complaint is when one decides the entrance channel of our Marina is the perfect place to stop, drop the rag and switch to engines, especially late on a Sunday arvo with half the marina up yer butt. Not that it would be to much of a problem for our 20ton, but the insurance paperwork!!!!

Hey Daddles, yes, I figure I must be "nuts" to own a timber boat. I was extremely nervous when she went back in the drink after 16weeks, been fully refastened and caulked and the water was pi##ing in for 3 days. The first night was interesting, I purchased 2 new Jarvis Walker float switches, one would not turn on and the other would not turn off. Don't buy that brand unless you are putting them in a small craft that rolls around a lot, they only have a ball inside that rolls onto a micro switch, sometimes the ball does not roll!!! I was up every hour belting one with a stick to turn it off and luckily I swapped the mercury one that run the bilge alarm with the one that would not turn on. She's all good now, tight as a drum (I HOPE).

I am starting in the lazarette first, batteries and genset will go down there as well as the workshop. May even put a bigger sullage tank in there, need to get the bum down a fair bit. Still have 6" of waterline showing on the stern.

Maybe a couple of tons of salted haddock stowed aft would bring her down nicely?

    Hey Fellas,
has kindly shrunk some pics for me. There are some before, during and an after one below.

I know slings are not real good for a timber boat but unfortunately the people that we chose to go with that was all they had to offer. She has a whopping great steel shoe down the keel so I am guessing that would help a bit.

The different colour in thee planks on the Starboard side is where the planks were replaced many years ago. Probably when a trawler and they steamed into a jetty, either reverse did not work or it was a cold night the skipper had had a few too many(Not that I have a problem with that )
