Thread: Mobile phones

There are some cheap reusable waterproof pouches (used for camping, mostly) that will take a mobile. A few dollars at one of the 'Hot Dollar' or '$2" stores.

Inconvenient to use but better than a wet phone.

Or - you could buy a second, cheap and nasty phone and swap the SIM card over when you are on the boat...keep the good phone for dry land.

I've seen a Telstra 'Tradie' phone, which was IP54 rated, so it's splash-resistant, but I think anything that was truly waterproof would have one of those 'I just want to buy the phone, not the nearest six cell towers as well!!' pricetags.

Wow , thank you people for the replies.
After I've been out to HS today I might do a bit of shopping , see what I can find.
But a temporary solution was staring me in the face this morning.
As I always do , I made the breakfast this morning , and included in that is our fish oil tablets.
We buy the "value pack" which is in a plastic jar 7-8 inches high and about 4 inches across.
That would take my wallet and my mobile phone , but its not something I could put in my pocket.
Its better than nothing !.

My Torch had the lid of a plastic peanut paste jar screwed to the removable bit of an inspection port. You put your bits in the jar, screwed it into it's lid, then screwed the whole lot into the inspection port . Cheap but it worked. Sadly, you can't get jars that big any more.

Richard , I could do that with these "Eco Fish Oil" plastic containers.
But , ah , my problem is with my little 6ft 6 tender !.
I'm a lot more careful now , I guess I needed that dunking .
But , I need something to get me from the shore to HS , on my tender little tender .
At the moment I'm thinking this jar in a little bum bag , under my PFD.
I went out again today , practice means improvement , thats for sure !.

If you don't have any sealed compartments in your tender, why don't you just put your mobile, etc into a zip lock bag then put that safely into a bum bag - the bum bag stays attached to you and the ziplock bags keep the water out.

In Redback, I just put things in zip lock bags and drop them into the floatation tanks, but she's got tanks to drop them into

Of course, you could just be a woose and not tip your tender over in the first place

OK , I'll tell on myself.
I was taking out a very experienced sailer to HS , an electronics expert , and I was getting ahead of myself , not thinking about what I was doing right at that moment.
I stepped on to that little tender wrong , and in the blink of an eye , she was out from under me , and I was in the drink.
I remember thinking "why hasn't the PFD gone off ?"
"I've wasted $300 +on a fancy PFD that doesn't work"!
Then I realised , I wasn't wearing the bloody thing !.
And , normally I'd have left my wallet behind .
I just wasn't thinking .
So , first thing to do , is make sure the brain is in gear , before doing anything !.
Richard , I wasn't sure how water proof those zip top bags were , maybe I should try some experiments here at home.
One other thing this dunking has prompted me to do , is to place the rope type ladder in a position I can easily get to it , if I fall off HS.
All part of my "edercation" , I guess.

Mate, they're airtight. Sure, they'll probably leak eventually but if that becomes an issue, you've got greater problems than the fact that you've just taken your wife's anniversary present for a swim

Of course, it all boils down to when you go for the swim ... nothing will work if you dunk the offending phone (a suitable punishment for all mobile phones ) before you get it into it's nice, safe container.

They work well, Rob!! I do a lot of fishing as well as boating and use a zip-lock bag for my phone. I have been in the water with it when fly fishing at the lakes and had no problems with the phone. The other advantage is that you can also use the phone without taking it out of the bag......great when you are out in the bay with nasty smelly fishy hands!!

I used to sell EWA Marine bags for people to put their camera gear in for when on the water or on the beach to keep sand out of delicate workings. Yes they are not cheap, but Geez they sure do work well. Try here ewa-marine Australia. Housings and rain capes for your camera and camcorder

hi rob,a very good result can be obtained by dissasembling your fone and placing it in your rice jar for a few days,rice can(hopefully) absorb the moisture out.ive done it twice now and it work both times,goodluck.d

Soak it in metho then let it dry out, The metho drives the water out and is a lot better for the electronics than water anyway.
