painting
I am using a oil based enamel to paint the inside of a ply and epoxy boat and have a problem. The primer bonds well to the bare ply but will not harden over tape and epoxy.I have sanded and cleaned with water and then thinners., painted at 24degrees and left for 3 days. What to do next? Can I carry on with the undercoat and topcoat or what to do.
Any suggestions appreciated

What primer are you using? What thinners are you using to clean with? Have you checked with the paint manufacture for compatibility issues?

Howdy,
this is not a super common problem, but it sometimes happens.
The solution is to use an undercoat under the enamel. The undercoat seems to harden fine and then the topcoat goes over fine.
Years ago we used to say that you could go straight over the epoxy with an enamel, but we started to have the same as your problem maybe one application in 20. It is common enough that we would always recommend undercoat.
To remove the existing trouble spots you could wet sand using about 180 grit wet and dry and water - put a bit of dishwashing liquid in the water - just a bit.
If it still clogs the paper badly you might have to use turps (gloves please) and the wet paper.
If you take care you may not have to retouch the epoxy too much.
Best wishes
Michael
