    Well, the Squadron met.
All three PDRs thrashed Teal in the ghosting conditions.
When the wind got up enough to challenge them to a re-match, they all pleaded
other pressing, urgent activities, packed up & left.

    Puddle Chicken Racers more like.

    MIK took lots of photos.
Including of a delightful little Oughtred(?) skiff that arrived as we were de-rigging.

There was also an eye-catching David Payne 8M O/B cruiser out for a spin, and a
modified TS16 - top of mast removed to the stays, main cut down to a gaff, and a
mizzen added. 5 large adults looked very comfy indeed cruising off up-river.

No pics from me. Daughter had pre-booked camera for weekend.
Nothing particularly photogenic about PCR transoms anyway.

Did have a sail of MIKs tweaked pink PCR.
Simply an amazing little boat !
Stable as a rock, even with my 100+kg aboard.
    Light, responsive, manoeverable.

Only one criticism really... The tiller needs to be 6" shorter.

    cheers

    You know AJ,

I forgot to take pics of the Oughtred Skiff.

But here is the set called
Goolwa, sailing with AJ, Andrea, Ted, Mike, Mike and Mike
First a mood Photo from the Murray Mouth where Ted's shack is.

    OK Saturday about 10am

    Rigging

The three Ducks ... one with the lug rig ... in light winds it was the fastest by a long way. It has a bit more sail and that homebuild lug design works really well.

Andrea's sit on kayak has a nice Paddle from my free plan download

I was to spend a lot of time looking at this transom during our fun race.

Mikes nice detail for the transition of bulkhead to side tank for the PDR

The little group of little boats in what has become the fascinating waterway of Goolwa. I love the winding waterways. There are bad things about the "management' of the drought damage - but the low water levels make it a much more interesting and scenic waterway. It looks like a real estuary.

We decided to race around the island.

Well ... we all sailed out into the channel and grouped together and I yelled out "BANG".

We knew Mike's boat was quick in light winds with a very powerful (and big) mainsail.

Mike in his fast lug rigged PDR was the pace setter. I was way too busy trying not to lose too much against him to take photos on the upwind and reaching leg.

But by the end of the windward leg he was about 30 metres ahead as he went around the pylon to reach along the top edge of the island.

It was pretty shallow and as the wind freed a little I pulled up the board and rudder and went closer into the island to try and shorten my sailing distance. By the time we got to the other side Mikes Sexy Black PDR was now 60 metres ahead. Either he had more wind or was really moving along under the influence of the lug sail.

I also went close to one of the navigation marks and found a log with my centreboard .... so I pulled it up and scooted across.

As I went around the top mark I took a pic of ted coming up the reaching leg behind the island. He had extracted himself from the shallows before AJ.

I kept looking for AJ, but his blue sail makes the boat impossible to spot .. for me anyhow. Even when I am only a few metres away.

This is how far Mike was ahead.

The photo doesn't show it. But Mike sails large boats normally so he was sitting right up the back of the puddleduck ... that way it feels like a longer boat - fits his perspective. But it also drags the transom a bit too. I think he fell asleep once and the boat veered out of control halfway down the leg for a moment.

I am concentrating furiously trying to catch up. Behind Ted has rounded the mark and is about the same distance behind.

I am catching up. And Mike is still dozing thinking he has the race under control.

At the bottom corner there is a pylon but we discussed that the bottom of the island is the bottom mark. So I work out ...

    1/ I am second already
2/ There is a chance I might be able to sneak across the sandbar
3/ If I fail I will still be second.
4/ Means I crash on the sandbar and it adds a bit of drama and Mike gets a bit of a giggle.
5/ If it works I can get around the corner first and block Mike's wind up to the finish line.

So ... Centreboard and rudder well up I shoot through the shallows.

    WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING!!!!! YAY!!!

    And pull out the camera

Also there is more breeze and my sprit rig PDR is much more powered up. I am leaning out quite hard to keep it upright, but the lug doesn't have quite as much power so Mike is sitting on the side comfortably, though is leaning in on these pics. Some more downhaul would probably help his speed quite a bit.

Mike and I pull ashore. Mike is rested from his nap.

Ted and AJ round the corner. Ted has managed to stave off AJ whose longer waterline may have allowed big gains on the run.

    Ted tacks

    And sails into the beach

Wasn't enough wind to make big gains.
Passed Ted while he was hung up in shallows in the first beating leg, & lost it all and
more when I sailed into a dead-end channel off-shoot near the amrina. Picked up a
little bit on the down-wind leg, but not much. Picked up a little more by cutting the
downwind corner, same as you did. Ted cut the corner too so not much to be had
there. Picked up most ground on that last beat when the wind got up & Teal could
    start to move properly.

As for the tiller length, I was trying not to depart from the plans too much out of
respect for the designer. But since you want to be sticky about it. NINE inches.

    cheers
    AJ

    Hi Guys,

It sounds like you had a really great time. I'm sorry I missed it.

I did get to go out on the water today however, when we launched my Dad's Annapolis Wherry for the first time. He finished it for the Wooden Baot Festival in Tasmania, but hadn't gotten it into the water until today.

Thanks to Peter Lessels for the loan of the sliding seat for today's launch.

(Don't look at the technique in this photo...I discovered that rowing is more difficult than it looks.)

    Cheers,
    Hawk.

AJ I have yet to set up a reefing system........well that's my excuse anyway and apologies for disappearing so early.

Really enjoyed our little outing.......and that's ducklings to you not chickens.

If I can work out how to load up video I'll post a couple of minutes of the three ducks with the sun behind them looks quite good.

    Mik,
I didn't quite go to sleep on the downwind leg and no I wasn't sandbagging but I did loose control when a puff decided to push the duck sideways as both the plate and rudder were up .
Then when attempting a standing adjustment of said rudder promptly let go of the mainsheet hence the radical sail trim .
Anyway a few glances over the shoulder confirmed my unbeatable lead so I sat down feet forward leaned up against the transom and enjoyed the ride. Little did I know a pink duck was closing rapidly....then oh no too late he got me.

    Mike

I don't believe the Easter sail in actually happened. I believe all the photos are fakes. I distictly remember 4 ft of snow falling that day along with hurricane force winds, two earthquakes and a volcano or two.
