Yanmar outboard
Last Monday our CG boat worked on an exercise with specialist Navy divers.
They had a RIB , with all sorts of gear.
Their outboard was a Yanmar outboard , which they are really happy with.
Why did Yanmar stop making it ?.

Hi Rob.
I know from the experience of our local salmon farm, the diesels were still quite heavy.
They were also very !!!!! expensive.
Perhaps Aus is just too small a market.

Paul , Yanmar stopped making them around the world .
I think their reliability , and not using a volatile fuel would be big plusses for the Navy , and fuel not going stale either.
Their sure sounded like a Yanmar though !.

I googled Yanmar Outboard and found some Pommy forum discussions. Apparently they made two models, about 26 and 37 HP. Someone was interested but wanted to know about parts etc. Response was that all parts were available in UK, and units could be made to order at factory at about 26,000 UK Pounds (2005) for the 26HP unit. OP on that forum was looking at it for cheaper fuel consumption than existing 50HP Mariner. Access to 40p/litre untaxed agricultural diesel compared to 120 p/litre for petrol. Lost interest at outright purchase price. Someone else did manage to source one secondhand but would not disclose purchase price.
Makes good sense in a high reliability defence situation as diesel would be available on ships, less fire risk than petrol, and would not have problems with wet ignition etc after a dunking. Yanmar diesels have a good rep for reliability and taking a caning.
Downside for average Joe, heavy (110Kg for bare motor 26 HP), and purchase price.Would be a good idea if they came up at defence surplus auction, but would they.

These Navy blokes will be hanging on to theirs , thats for sure.
Apparently parts are no problem.
I reckon if I was to set up a tender on cray boat , to use for exploring etc , I'd go for a diesel , either inboard or outboard.
No Petrol on board.
