Default I am having to scroll horizontally on threads/posts

Today looking at the forum requires me to adjust the screen horizontally when opening threads.

Is it the same your end?

Coming back this time I got a list of adverts down the left of the screen, eventually they turned off and the page centred OK.

    Jow,

You need to close that favourites window on the left.
    Cheers,

That's only part of the problem. It seems there's been some "mating ritual" anomalies attending the recent upgrades. I've seen different formats (user block above vs left side; too-wide screen vs full width) with IE and Firefox, but separated in time, which might have straddled corrections. I expect things will settle down eventually. At least the unwanted e-mail notifications aren't there anymore (I hope).

At least the User Box is back where it belongs Joe, on the left, instead of on top. That really mucked up the flow of the thread IMHO.

At least we won't get bored with the forum, every time we log on it looks different, even changes while we watch

Actually, changing on the fly is a sign of bad development practices, which is symptomatic of the problems we see at each "upgrade".

All the changes should be made in a separate environment, thoroughly tested, then copied over to the production environment as a complete set of changes.

Less fiddling, more testing, less "bling", and we'd have a more stable and usable forum.

And yes, I *do* appreciate the forum and the effort that goes into its operation ... but some professional help would definitely clean it up.

Sure, if you'd like some help.

I can't help with the graphical aspects, as I have less artistic talent than a garden slug. If you'd like help here I can recommend some companies with whom we work on a regular basis.

I'd like to help with usability recommendations, but I do recognise that these relate to individual preferences. Most of my work in this space has been with corporations, and that might lead me to a more conservative implementation than you want. As an example, how many referrals have you had from slashdot, simpy, getboo or reddit? If the answer isn't "thousands", why are we wasting the space between the last post and the Quick Reply box?

I can definitely help with development practices, coaching, tools, etc. That would range from recommendations like those I made recently regarding file archiving, to help with matters like source control, testing and deployment.

Let me know what you'd like.

    Ron.

Ron, I think our intrepid leader uses the same testing procedure that Mickeysoft uses, ie customer QC. I think we are now on SP3

All jokes aside, I do agree that "off site" testing would defintely be of benefit to all and perhaps a core of volunteer testers, say 1 or 2 for each major browser, would take a load off Neil and Steven. Don't quite know how this would work, but willing to put up my hand up as one of the Firefox testers.

These same people could perhaps make comment on some of the planned "default" changes, which when made, after due consideration has been give to their effect, could be announced so that people at least know that something has changed and that it could affect the way the forum works.
