Installing glass bricks in bathroom window

Hi all,

We are renovating our house - late 1960's vintage - and one of the requests from the better half was for glass bricks in the bathroom and toilet windows (toilet currently only has fixed louvres so is either hot or cold depending on the day outside - unpleasant for middle of the night visits in winter!).

I can make the window frames the right size for the bricks, but can't find much info on installing them. From a DIY and cost perspective I'd like to do it myself (having done most other jobs in the house) but the only home maintenance book I have says under 'glass brick installations' : "get a professional to do it." Is it that hard to do properly? Is there any sites or books showing how to do it - any advice would be well received. I assume (rightly or wrngly) that you use normal mortar (probably with a mould resistant additive) and lay them as normal bricks?

Thanks in advance - even if I do end up gettng someone else to do it!

G'day.
We placed a glass brick window in our ensuite when we built.
It has a powder coated frame with the glass bricks siliconed in and silicone between each brick.
We got installation info from the glass place we bought them from.
They are great for light entry and safe enough that no one can see in.

You can normally buy glass bricks as kits. They are normally simple to install using a premade frame and silicon with aluminium spacers. Try these companies:

Darren,

If yoyu are anywhere near Scoresby, there's a factory outlet there which will give you all the help and info. They are on the corner of Ferntree Gully Rd and Rushdale Dve. They have lots of differwent styles etc.
You need to get your powder coated frame made into whatever shape you are going to have and take that home before doing the timber frame in the wall. Then do the wall frame to match. They also supply all the aluminium brackets and white silicon filler. The glass brick window we have just finished was done by our builder and he prefers to use a superfine white tile grout on the inside instead of silicon. He reckons it's easier to apply and get a nice smooth finish with.
