    Default First Guitar

Well here it is....the end result of a three week guitar building school I recently attended in Wellington New Zealand. Details as follows:

Guitar is an OM size steel string.
Back, sides and bridge are Indian Rosewood. Neck is Sapelli (sp?) and top is AA grade Engleman Spruce. Binding is maple and rosewood. Bracing under top is standard Martin X brace pattern with all braces shaped and scalloped.

    Pic attached..

    Cheers MFT

Sorry about the pic size and quality. I have 800 pics taken during the course so will try and find something better.

Clamps used were a combination of wooden cam clamps and bar and G clamps clamps. The course was held at a high school woodwork room so clamps and other tools were in fairly good supply although chisels looked like theyd been used as screwdrivers and the band saw blade broke at least twice a day.

The guitar was built using a free from technique....ie built up on a workboard.

The sound? Not a loud guitar but tone is bright and very balanced.

Musically challeneged myself...I can wring a few notes out of a guitar but quite frankly I'd rather be maken 'em than playing 'em.

Wow - I'm very keen to make a guitar. Well done mate. How about a 'Derek' style paper on th process - plenty of spare time on the rig!

Nice stringy piece of wood mate.
Is that because of the OM size as in a small shallow body, my washburn D9 dreadnoght(that the right lingo?)its quite loud the body is big and deep.
Can you play much, I been playing since I was 11 still cant play ****!

Body size has alot to do with the generally "bigger" sound of a dreadnought but top thickness/wood type and bracing will also significantly affect sound. Looking around the shops dreadnaughts seem to be the "in" guitar at the moment.

One thing that became clear during construction was the numerous factors that control the sound of an acoustic guitar.

I dont play alot these days mainly because of work commitments. Im actually classically trained but decided with 3 classical instruments lying around the workshop it was time I owned a steel string.

A paper on guitar building??? Would like to oblige but dont really have time. I do have a huge book full of copious (and largely illegible) notes taken during the course and I managed to shoot off 800 photos documenting the birth of the guitar. When I get some more free time Ill post a few selected pics on the forum.
