Lightbulb All Things Old Are New Again

    Greetings,

My First Pic in the gallery, what do you think?

I hope this picture quality isn't lost in the translation.

My "Water Pod" is crafted from plantation hardwood that I laminated, it was once a discarded pallet. The legs are from steamed and jig formed Kwila held in place by gold plated spike nails with rounded heads. I had to attach a small light bulb to the hollowing gouge to get the walls thin enough, yet not break through the timber.

Notice the wet look on the outside and the splash the external water creates at the base as the water drips off the pod (picture clarity dependant). If you were to look inside, you would see a pool of water that reflects all that is beautiful (your reflection).

Very nice Darren. I like the way the vessel almost meets the base - sort of like a water drop separating.

    Gold plated nails!?

    Hi Alex,

Yep! Gold plated nails. The natural tanic acids in timber tarnish and in due time chemicaly modify lesser grade metals. That's why average steel/iron nails turn black in normal timber useage. Shipbuilders use brass for this reason. But in my case, I didn't want the brass to oxidise and turn green and then stain the vessel. Gold won't tarnish.

    Dazza,

It looks really good and I am more into cabinet type work.

Where do you get gold plated nails?

Take several pairs of SWMBO's favorite gold-plated earings, snip them once... bend them into a straight piece of metal and shape a head on one end and a sharp point on the other.

Then proceed to pack your bags

    Dazza,

How can she afford such things and buy you tools and wood?

Anyway your piece looks good and apart from the technical reason behind the gold nails, they look OK too.

Pardon my ignorance but what the hey is an SWMBO?

I gather it's means "she who should be obeyed" or in my house "Herself"

Thanks for the replies Woodies! Your feedback is appreciated. I wasn't aware this URL was in existence, but now it is in my favourites folder and better in some ways than a chat page.

    Many happy turnings!

She who must be obeyed - from Rumpole isn't it?
