Alternative to vacuum veneering
Rubber strip cut from a truck-tyre inner tube. The press was used for bending the ply and later for applying the veneer

Thats a pretty serious set up you've got there.
The table looks great, very understated but I think the veneer's grain would really set it off.
How long did it take to make up that jig, or is it from a set up that you have used often?

Thanks Clinton,
This was the first serious piece of furniture I had made. At the time, I was doing woodwork classes 3 hours a week, with various interruptions, the piece took a staggering 6 years to make, as I had to deal with timber that had a mind of its own. The jig took 4 months to make and it was only used once. I'm glad I'm not doing this for a living..... I don't think I would make any money!

Not at all. I'm enjoying them too.
(your jigs are better than my finished products )If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Zelk, I'll be dissappointed if you stop posting pics of work you've done.
Seriously, keep it up please.
For a first serious project the desk is pretty ambitious, and it seems that you've pulled it off well.
Questions:
What is the veneer that you used, birds eye maple?
What did you make the frame and panel backings from?
Where did you get the idea for the metal work in the jig (the two threaded rod setup) and do you have some more pic's of the jig?
Thanks,
EDIT: Where did you get the solid Qld Walnut that you used in the coffee table? I've got 2 meters of 3" x 2" and except for some 6mm panel material I can't find any solid QW. Seems pretty rare.

Keep them coming Zelk
You gotta admire a man that spends 4 months making formwork! Little surprise that your end results are immaculate.
Just thank God its not your daytime job!Bodgy

The veneer used was birds eye maple, anegre and some other type used for the edging of the top.
Birds eye maple timber was used for the internal panels.
Plywood was used for the backing.
The hall table consists of 3 pieces, it is not one solid structure.
The metal work was an after thought, I made it myself (using my arc welder)..... I like to over engineer things for piece of mind.
The pictures of the jig were photo's of photo, that were taken about 15 years ago with a compact 35mm, they were the better ones.
Two curved panels were made, each panel was cut to make a door and complementary draw front.
