My latest artwork
Here's a detail photo of a work I finished today , ready for a competition/exhibition. The main part is made from Monterey cypress (C. macrocarpa) with a bit of rosewood and red cedar, and aluminium parts. Its called Frankenstein Flower.
The progress I documented here, I think? http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=33369
Hope you enjoy it! Cheers,Andy Mac

I do indeed enjoy it. Andy, you're amazing -- I can't believe this is finished already. I love everything about this; the form, the name, the materials. What finish did you use on the wooden bits?
Greenie etc. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Love it Andy. Can see where you got the name from.
Will it take your finger off, if you stick your finger in the middle ?
Have you ever thought of merging electronics with woodwork as well? I had a few ideas a while back along that line..... I once made a letterbox that barked everytime the lid was opened. Just rigged up a little switch and a recording of a dog barking......lots of fun scaring the posty. (bit childish eh?)
But you can rig up LED lights pocking out of holes in the wood. Little motors from printers and the like to do things.
I like the idea of placing lights behind stained glass. Mooood lights, sort of thing....maybe behind drawer fronts or whatever. Look great in the dark...yet to try that myself. one day.
Anycase, love your freeky flower Andy. Clever Stuff.

Nice piece of art work hope you do well in the show.
After the show are you selling or keep it. It would be a great feature in the garden under cover of the front veranda or some were prominent to greet people.

Thanks everyone for your feedback, and for wishing me luck in the sculpture prize! I delivered it yesterday afternoon and had a quick look at some of the competition...it'll be a big ask to win! The prize is aquisative, so if you get lucky they pay you out and keep the piece for the council's collection. If I don't, well I'll have it to try and sell, either in the exhibition or later.
A couple of things, the timber is finished with China oil (Tung oil mostly) and some wax. That springy thing coming out of the centre (pistil?) is an offcut of piano wire, and is fixed (ie glued) in position. I have thought of motorizing, or otherwise activating some of these works. A motion sensor would be ideal to get them started. There are many options, and computer programs etc I guess I could use, things like actuators and muscle wire, stepper motors and all sorts. I even have a collection of motors, gearboxes, power supplies and actuators etc from printers and photcopiers. Trouble is I really know next to zip about them, and how to get them to actually do what I want! Sure, I can wire up a fan or a plain motor and such simple tasks, and nut out a linkage system from a gearbox, but the control side of it...nothing!! To actually make a worthwhile and seemless job of it, I realistically need to call in an expert, some robotics nerd . Later...
Cheers,Andy Mac
