    Default Asian style lamp

    Hi All,

I got a pair of chinese lanterns during one of my trip to Asia. The lanterns have been stored for quite some time and finally I decided to make a lamp, well an asian style lamp.

For this project I selected mahogany wood due to the nice tones and since it's quite strong wood it allows me to reduce the sizes of each part.
The idea is to make something quite simple with a zen appearance, I hope so .

The lamp is composed by a base, a vertical coloumn with the electrical wires inside, two supports for the lantern and a top.

Let's start with the base, here the pictures:

I would keep the tones of the wood even if i like to get it a bit darker; what kind of finishing for mahogany? Any suggestion?

    Cheers,
    Gio

Where will the lamp be situated, will it be near strong sunlight or moisture, or just in the middle of a lounge room?
To get it a little darker you can use an oil based finish or if using a lacquer a tint can be mixed into the finish before applying it.

    Hi Harry72,

    tks for your comment. Appreciated.
Well not sure at this point about where to locate the lamp, but probably in a room and far from strong sunlight and/or moisture, actually is quite dry.
The oil finishing is what I have in mind, and after this perhaps some light coat of shellac before some beeswax.

    Cheers, Gio

    Hi All,

    some progress with the project.
Completed the vertical coloum that is made by 2 separate pieces (2x4x210 cm) where I have cutted a dido to accomodate the electical cables. After the complention of the wiring, the 2 pieces will be glued togheter to get a square coloum (4x4x210 cm).
In order to avoid any issue the cables have been oversized.

    Here the pictures:

The oil finish will suit just fine.
You can directly display your pictures here on the forum rather than clicking to an external link or you can use the code supplied by PB to display pic's without going there. Waiting for PB page to load can be slow at times.

    Hi All,

I'm here back with the latest update on this project.
I have completed some other items, all of them made of mahogany.

The top, made of 2 separate items that will be glued up together . One of them has a square hole to accomodate the vertical coloum.
As well I have done the 2 horizontal support for the lanterns; the ends of each support have been shaped to get a more interesting appearance.

And finally 2 pieces that will be glued on the vertical coloum under each horizontal support. This to ensure the perfect horizontal position of the supports when I'll hang the lanterns.

Here the pitures of all the above items. Hope everything is clear enough.

Have a great week end & cheers,
    Gio

    Hi All,

the lamp is almost completed, well the wood part is done i just need to realize the electrcial connections for the two lanterns.

I'm quite happy with the result, the mahogany was indeed a great timber for this project. I got both tone and appearance similar to the Asian timber.
For the finishing I have used boiled linseed oil + shellac + wax.
The wax I have selected is a mix of wax including also beeswax and is mahogany stained. This really help to get a darker and more red timber.

Here some pictures about the lamp and some details as well.

Hope you like this project and thanks in advance for any feedback/suggestion.

Now I have just to complete the wiring and switch one the light ...

    Cheers from Italy,
    Gio
