Bar stools
Some stools I've made to match a bar(aussie leaning post... a search will find it)I made last year for a workmate.
All crapiarta pine, base's is all joined with through M&Ts except the foot rests witch have finger joints on the corners, they have heavy duty spindle/L'susan bearings(3mm steel!)seat is laminated 2 layers and tilted back about 4 degrees, seat back is M&T'd into the seat base and the spats are half lapped into the top rail.
The seat squabs are my fisrt attempt at upholstering furniture(... ex car audio head!).
They're very comfy with testing so far, the squabs have 30mm high density foam with a layer of 20mm low density foam on top, the upholsterer I got the gear from gave me some "slip foam" to put inbetween the 2 layers too facilitate movement. They're soft to touch then get harder once you put some body weight on them.
Finish is walnut oil base stain and poly.
All up they cost about $80ea to make
3 of them, tried taking the pic inside but turned out crap!
Outside in the sun light, can see colour much better
Some of the joinery...
All 6 of them
The bar they will be situated at

Hardest part, getting the half laps nice on the top rail as the spats are splayed slightly so the outside spats go into the rail less and at a different angle... took 3 separate router jigs to do this!

Harry, I remember the Leaning Post, great job, & The stools will set it off great as well. I Really like the colour you have gone with on the stools, can you give me a bit more detail. EG, Brand, No of coats etc.

Its wattyl walnut brown oil based stain and wattyl cheap ass poly unipac(terrible stuff, Cabots rule ok!), only 1 coat of stain brushed on evened with a rubbing rag(french polish rubber)then buffed off with a clean rag.
Finish is sprayed... I dont like brushing poly.
1st coat of poly was thinned 50/50 with turps denibbed with some 0000 steelwool then the second coat was tinted with some stain and thinned 80/20, denibbed again then final coat thinned 95/5 for a nice gloss.
Hint, to get stain this dark on crapiarta dont final sand any more than 180g, its the roughness of 180 that holds on to the solids of the stain... if you sand to 320 it will not stain as dark(end grain excluded) and if your not finishing with thick poly dont do it.....................................................................

Elegant yet strong, modern yet rustic, artistic yet inviting. My hat's off to ya mate! A greeny's already been logged. And to prove one wasn't a fluke, you went and made another 5!
Damn show-off

Yeah I thought Id try something different, I allways found the problem with bar stool foot rests is your feet end up squeezed between the legs of the stool... ok for the girls but can be uncomfortable for the blokes(you know what I mean!)
So by putting a chair leg in the middle your feet go each side no problems... and the girls can still sit like a lady so to speak....................................................................

Thanks for the tip Harry, now I know why I have not been able to achieve the darker colours.
Once again, well done.

Magnificent!
The design of these stools is sheer brilliance. The "open-air" footrests should make them really comfy. Very impressed with the thought put into them, the nice joinery, very smooth looking upholstery and beautiful looking finish.
Greeny on way. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

great stuff there Harry. Very impressive design and execution. Doing six of them is pretty big stuff.
You surely aren't still worried about working with Hardwoods? Considering how good the stuff you are putting out is.
