Bargain Buys?
Managed to grab a couple of good buys at the local markets today.
1. A couple of Disston panel saws for $3 each. One of them needs a new handle (any suggestions?) and both need a good clean and sharpen.
2. A no.5 plane for a present for my father-in-law. He helped me a lot when I was renovating my house (which we sold for a $50,000 profit) and was asking me about hand planes for light work eg. trimming doors and windows. The guy at the market asked $45 but I managed to get him down to $35 on account that the sole has some minor pitting and the blade is going to need some serious attention.Have a nice day - Cheers

Well done it's allways good to get a bargain.
The saws reminded me of many years ago when I decided to sand blast one of my Distons to clean it up. Did the first side and picked it up to do the other side and noticed it could cut around corners. Had a huge curve in the blade. Decided to do the other side hoping it might straighten it back up. Didn't work out like that and ended up with a piece of steel that could clean s bends but it was free of rust. :eek:Cheers,
Rod

Damn, why didn't I go to the markets?
If we learn by our mistakes, I have had a wonderful education!

Handles on the saws look fine to me. What's wrong with the dodgy one? I would have been concerned that the rust would have pitted the sawteeth, preventing them from being well sharpened. Still $3 each for the handles alone would be good value. Sawhandles always being useful for pushsticks, jigs, etc. Good stuff
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
