    Default Barrel Dispenser

A mate was given a barrel dispenser for Christmas. He makes his own port wine (two or three glasses and it's Good Night Vienna
The dispenser came with a useless stand (see photo with teaspoon for scale) so he asked me to come up with something better.

My son had given me a bunch of what he said was magnolia which had been shipped in for flooring but then the client changed their mind. I had never come across it before so I've added some photos in case someone can confirm or correct what species it is.

As they say, 'form follows function' so the design had to allow for holding the barrel firmly so the tap (which is stiff) could be operated. I also decided to lift the whole thing so a wine glass would fit under the tap. I made a template out of mdf and trimmed it until it gave a good interference fit around the barrel. ( I had originally wanted to shape the front and rear supports as shown by the template but the resulting arms were too fragile so I left them square). I then rough cut the shape and refined it using the template and a piloted router bit (the arrows on the template were to remind me of the direction of cut).

I M&T'd the uprights into the base and inserted a bar between front and rear for strength. The finish is regular poly. I am trying to source a suitably sized cork to which I'll attach a same wood handle.

    Hope you like.
    Cheers,
    Pete

That's cool. I need to know the brand, I'd like one.
In this day and time, cork is not cheap. A lot, even bottle corks, are laminated glue-ups that then get shaped.
That's the direction that I'd look. There's cork crop troubles in both Portugal and Spain.

Back in the early 1970's there were stories of a cork oak plantation somewhere in the Canberra vicinity.
I never found the time to look for it.

Thanks for all the likes folks.

Robson Valley, the dispenser is made by Kilner, the same people who make preserve jars. Thanks for the tip re: corks. So far I've found them smaller and larger than the size I need (32mm or 1-1/4").
    Cheers,
    Pete

I used to make wines. 600 bottle batches so was always on the look-out for cork deals.
Even in 1,000 cork lots, the criminals wanted $0.27 each!!!! Went to bag-in-a-box.

I can buy composite cork sheeting 3mm x 1m. I'd make a mandrel and glue a cork veneer to it.
Then keep looking for a solid cork piece.

The pictures are deceptive. I believed the dispenser was 4-5 liters until you mentioned cork sizes.
I can buy the 1-liter sized dispenser in the city. Alberta Premium Canadian Rye whiskey should be just about right.
Short glass, 3 ice cubes and fill to cover.

Crikey RV!! If you need a 4 to 5 litre jobby for your rye whiskey maybe you need someone to come and help you drink it!
What's your address and I'll be over?

    You're right, it's only a 1 litre (34 US fl.oz.) dispenser.
    Cheers,
    Pete

Alberta Premium has been the breakfast of champions for decades. Actually quite good and not insipid like Canadian Club BBQ lighter.
I used to like a little water and ice but I can hardly recall what it tastes like these days. Help is good.
We get 1.14 liter bottles (40 oz) that would just fit with some taste testing.

Cork. Can you find a business which furnishes show cases and does acoustic sound abatement installs?
We had 3-4 cm thick wall apps at work to cut traffic noise.

RV, the cork plantation in Canberra is near the National Arboretum, but I don't know how you'd go getting some cork from it. Guess you could try some of those kitchen supply places that sell the big jars with cork stoppers.

Thanks AlexS. Would not hurt to ask them.
I need to buy a Kilner jug, first. Probably carve something from western red cedar as a stopper.
There was a pottery business in Eltham that made ceramic jugs with spiggots.

Yup. It's a Texan teaspoon. In fairness to Kilner, I guess the stand was only for display purposes but I do think they should have included a stopper. The small s.s. cup drops into the barrel opening but gives no kind of seal to stop your precious liquid evaporating.

    Pete
