Beautiful Blackwood
Just thought I'd post this box. It's some of the most beautiful Tassie Blackwood I've worked with. Beautiful olive colours when the sun hits it and excellent grain. The base is Surian and the handle is Macassar Ebony.
Regards,
Rob

Very nice. What did you use for a finish?
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Thanks for the kind comments gentlemen. With timber that stunning, the best thing you can do is stay out of your own way and let it happen!
Cisco, the box was sanded using a ROS in random orbital mode, starting at 100g and going to 400g. Blackwood has a habit of showing swirlies, so careful sanding is a must. Then Scandinavian oil was added to saturation and the oil friction sealed with a Festool ETS150/3 (3mm stroke) continuing from 400g through to 4000g. Final finish was done using EEE Ultrashine as a final cutting agent, then UBeaut Traditional wax. (These are available in the US.)
Regards,
Rob
