Bed completed
Here are some pictures of my completed bed.
I used the link found in this thread to get the basic design...

...more pics
I intended to put drawers underneath but the bed is too high (top of matress is 700mm above the floor) so I'm going to have to chop the legs down.
Cost: $180 for the radiata pine, $25 for the polyurethane and stain, $20 for the screws, $700 for the mattress.
Things I learnt:
- I need to take more care with my biscuit joints: I must have moved the jointer settings during use because the planks making up the headboard did not join up as neatly as normal
- sanding with ROS doesn't leave lots of tiny sanding circles (which I'd feared)
- 19mm dowel joints work well on large projects and give a robust feel
- I should have used more sanding sealer on the end grain to give a smoother finish
- fittings allowing easy disassembly (cross-dowel joints and threaded inserts) work well

Eeeeeeexcellent! I bought kingsize wool underlay/down duvet/covers/sheets etc in the Myer sale.... winter 2003. Bought the slats for the base.....in 1998.
'Gunna' make that sucker any time soon!
Good show for finishing something, and a top job.
Now that you've saved all those $$$$$, you can justify buying some TOOLS YEAH BABY

Thanks for the comments.
Woodborer: yes, the bed is very comfortable - no squeaks or rattles. Will let you know how it wears in 10 years time
One day I will progress to finer wood, but at the moment I am still honing my skills with pine/plywood and grappling with the scary world of staining!

Great effort, Tony. Thanks for sharing.
As a short ***** i'd have to take a running leap just to get on the thing.
Good luck as you enter the scary world of staining.
