Default Bedside cabinet for my son

I started making this shortly before xmas for my sons present, to go with the bed I made him a little while back.

It is made from ironbark, finished with tung oil and traditional wax. Actually managed (unusually for me!)to finish it within about a month of starting it, and that was with xmas in between

I hadnt attempted to do dovetails in ironbark before, was a trifle more difficult than doing them in hoop pine! Using runners was a new experience too, if anyone ever takes them off they will shake their head in wonder about how many different holes I drilled trying to get them right(Like, there has to be a knack to it hay?)

I wasnt sure how I was going to do the base, until I noticed an offcut which had come apart along a resin flaw and thought how handy, and tidied it up, cut it into four pieces and used them as feet.

I didnt notice until I took the photo that the end grain of the drawer had become blotchy, will fix it up when I go visit one day (or then I will probably just forget about it knowing me).

There is to be a basket in the bottom shelf, but have left that up to my son to do.

The shelves are morticed into the sides, and the sides are morticed into the top.

Nice one, Donna. You're brave using ironbark for the drawer sides - I usually use something a little softer.

    Great result.

    Thanks for your kind comments.

I told my son he would get a matching one when he gets a long term girlfriend with a big thumb who would encourage him to save money and stop running amok!

Beautiful work Donna. Good luck on the son running amok. Rasied three boys, can't stop them. By the way, what are the white and silver things on the head board and foot board?
In woodworking there is no scrap, only firewood.

They are tealight candles, forgot to take them off before i took the photo, I did berate him over having them there!

A greenie? Still havent figured out what that is, does it equate to a bourbon?

Call it a virtual bourbon. My shout.

If you click on UserCP, you'll see your greenies. They once meant something for one's reputation, but it's more a symbolic gesture these days.

The only thing I can fault about the side table and bed is that it is not in MY bedroom.
Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammo.

Lucky lad. The ironbark looks great. Well done Donna.
