You know, I never once thought how the cues are made, until PurpleHeart started posting here. Now, I will always look at the cues whenever I get the chance to play pool. They are never as nice as the pictures in this thread though

    Wow that is nice

But why 1 & 1/2 cues? I was never much of a pool/billiard player just when drunk in the pub so please forgive my ignorance.

Hey There...nothing wrong with asking a question....

By "One and a half Cues"....do you mean ...why is there ONE "Butt Section"...and TWO "Shafts" (The Top Piece).

    If so....the answer is thus...

Did you notice the tips on the shafts are different sizes ?

Often "Pub Pool" as you call it, it played with very small balls. Maybe 1/7/8" or 2".

Snooker balls might be 2" (Small) or 2/1/8". For these games, you use a Cue (Or if you are smart.....a cue with a shaft...) that has a smaller tip.

The full size POOL game, is played with 2.25" balls, which are large and heavy when compared to the smaller balls. You need a different shaped cue (Especially the shaft - or top section) and you need a bigger tip.

This cue combination allows a person to play a variety of games.

Often people will buy 2 or 3 shafts for their cue, as there is nothing worse than having the tip come off during a competition.

In the same way as you don't play a round of golf with only one club, there are cues for different games, and cues for different shots as well. A person might have a "Breaking Cue" (Used just for the break shot", Various "Jump Cues" (For playing Jump Shots), a Masse Cue (For Playing the Masse or Swerve Shot) etc etc. All these cues have different weights, tapers, tips etc etc.

    Cheers - PH.

    Beautiful work Purpleheart.

    Good explanation too.

I was wondering, apart from looking great, are the laminated cues better than one piece of timber?
Does it stop them from warping/bending?
Do you select the timbers for weight and balance?

    Cheers
