    Default Black Butt table

Here are some pics of a Table I made some time ago, but don't think I posted. The table top has been sanded to 4000 grit using a Festool ETS400 orbital sander and papers. ROS from 120 to 4000. Finish is Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil.

    Regards,

    Rob

    Very nice indeed

Good for me to see the colours that can be brought up in blackbutt - I'm about to start on a blackbutt slab for a one piece coffee table. Can I ask what epoxy you used for filling holes/cracks, and what you used to colour it? At the moment I'm planning to use West System; I have the 105 resin and 206 slow hardener, not sure whether to colour with FW prooftint, sawdust, or what? I think I'd like any cracks to be filled with opaque colour (which looks like what you have done), after which I may insert bowties across the larger cracks on the underside (out of sight) as insurance against the crack opening up further.

Undecided whether to source additional blackbutt for the coffee table "undercarriage", or try some other possibly contrasting species.

Yeah, nah. Lovely job, but it just doesn't work for me. I'd reckon either all straightish boards or all dodgy ones, I don't think they mix to the best effect.

Yeah, nah, you might be right. He picked the timber and wanted the boards just so. But thank you for the comment.

Everyone to their own. I have found that some people have very fixed ideas on grain, grain matching and 'interesting features'. So the old saying 'the customer is always right' is a good policy for makers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but to me it appears to have a few blemishes in it.

Nice finish Rob, does the organoil take much buffing to get to that level ?

Default G'day Keith, this might help

Hi Keith and thank you. I sand from 100 to 400 (120, 150,180, 240 and 400) then add the oil so that the surface is good and wet, but not saturated. (500, 800,1000, 1500,2000 and 4000. I sand the surface with these grits using 10 up and back strokes across the surface using a slight overlap, then a quick go over with a dry cotton cloth.

This may be overkill. You can probably get a good finish using only some of the grits, but the minimum would be 120,150,180 and 400, followed by 500, 800, 2000 and 4000.

A little playing around with the grits will sort out what's best for you. But I suggest you try with the full panel first.

You don't need excess pressure, just enough to get a slurry at the start, then continue to the finish.

Just let me know if you need help.

    Regards,

    Rob

Where is the best/cheapest place to get Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil?

I have seen it at Carbatec, but the price made me wince a tad.

    Hi Cava,

I think it's about the same. But give Organoil a call (toll free I hope) and ask them if you can get some kind of Seniors discount, or they may be able to help with the pricing. They're a good crowd as far as I can tell.

It's getting to the point where they could look at discount for the Forums. I might ask and see what happens.

    Regards,

    Rob

Their 1300 phone number has been disconnected, so I sent an email enquiry.
