    Default Blackwood Dining Table

Hi Guys well I’ve finished the blackwood dining table it’s only taken 5 months it’s a bit hard to nip into the shed when you work at sea. The table is 1800mm L X 850mm W the legs are M & T joints the feet are pined into the leg with dowel hidden with hole plugs, the legs are angled in by 5% with a slight arched support between them. The table top is held down with timber buttons and has breadboard on the ends glued in the center third with dowel pining them at the ends in small slots to allow for timber movement (thanks to the guys on the forum for that) and finished is with a poly. Now I have to make a matching sideboard and then the chairs.

I was just watching the New Yankee Workshop where Norm was making two chairs in the one weekend. If it has taken you 5 months for the table, 8 of those chairs might take you 10 years.

    BTW nice table.

Yes, it grows (or used to) in Tasmania and along the east coast. Reputed to be darker the further south you go. It's an acacia and is similar to Koa that grows in Hawaii IIRC.

Tas blackwood's the same species as the mainland stuff.
The level of darkness seems to depend (at least to some degree) on soil types.
