    Thumbs up Blackwood Miners Couch.............

Well this is my second project since being in Tassie as i now have my own dry timber to play with. This Blackwood comes from logs that were felled around 30 years ago and left in the forest so my friend in the industry who i have educated to keep an eye out for all good timber found these logs and hence they found their way to my place...there are a few worm holes in them but were filled with sanding dust mixed with pva so not quite so noticable.....i am pleased with the result from such old timber and was surprised at the quality it had held over all those years on the ground so here are a couple of pics....

    Tasman...................

Any reasonable offers will be considered....

    Hi Tasman.

It is great to see such nicely coloured and grained timber being used so well ,particularly after lying around for 30+ years .

    Thumbs up Yo Major..............

Yea Major we look after him very well he has free reign to our milled timber and i have made him a video cabinet and soon will be making a sassafras table for him so no panic here... oh and of course a slab or two of the amber liquid,he really likes that.Next week end we are going out to his work and getting some blackwood and wattle logs and also i must add we will be getting a licence for it lol we have to do the right thing always so we can access this nice stuff........we have a nice big blackwood log we will be slabbing in the next week it is top grade timber so slabbing is the only way to get the best from it.Thanks also for the compliments............
All the best for Christmas and new year ........

Re: the legs: were they template routed or bandsawn and sanded to final shape(or some other technique?)? If routed, how did you handle the shaping for the parts of the curve cutting into the grain? The finish on Blackwood is great but I have found that Blackwood is one of the worst for breakout/chipout whilst cutting shapes such as your legs! Well done.

    Thumbs up Re Legs

Hi there ......the legs were drawn on with a template from an original, mortised then cut with a band saw and sanded on a disk sander where i could then finished off by hand........The turnings seemed to take ages but i guess i am not a profesional turner either so i just take my time and win in the end........

Yep ... for just 4 legs bandsawing and sanding would be the best way to go .... even though for me I'll do almost anything to avoid sanding. Ditto your comments on the turnings - turning one of a thing (that doesn't have to match anything else) is OK, but more than one of a thing that has to look identical ....

    Best wishes for Christmas

    Tasman

That is very nice work! Such wonderful timber, and you have used it well. Great job altogether.

Any chance for a slab or two in the mail before Christmas?

    Regards from Perth

    Yo Jim/Tasman...

Wow! thats just georgous work mate, really looks the part.
I like the turned ends and curly bits, must have taken some hours to put together.

That old blackwood really does justice to yr design....what r ya gonn do with it, sit in it, sell it...?

I know some instrumnet makers would kill for older blackwood like that.

BTW is that an accordian i see tcuked away there ?

    thanks for the pictures

    regards

That pice u sold me has some nice grain so i will wait for the right inspiration.

I did turn another pice of the sassafras i got from u for a raised platter stand, very nice grain...

    will grab a camera soon...

Merry xmas to you Jim..have a great time...

    Hi Tas!

Stunning piece! Love the leg shape and the material is exquisite! Whenever I hear someone made something in Blackwood I cringe because of the myriad slimy green/brown Blackwood kitchens I have seen.

There sure is "blackwood and blackwood"

    Well done mate

ps. I mod'd the left hand pic as it looked a bit washed out - hope it helps .... if not, apologies for stickin me head in inappropriately.
