Blackwood and Red Gum Hall Table
After making the Huon and Red Gum Hall table for someone else, I decided on Saturday that I was going to make a Blackwood Hall table with Red Gum bread board ends to match the one in the Entrance hall. The table is 1200mm long x 300mm wide and 750mm approx tall. The finish is Organoil Hard Burnishing Oil. Joinery is 6mm dominoes.
The Blackwood was salvaged from the renovation of my Dining Table and the Red Gum was left over from the Huon and Red Gum hall table build.
Regards,
Rob

Nice table Rob
I'm interested to know how you made the breadboard ends to allow for movement? Did you make the middle domino a loose fit, then the rest a tight fit?
Thanks,
Andy

I think the normal method is to pin and glue the center and allow the rest to move, with over-sized mortises, and slotted holes in the tenons.

That would be correct Toby. I have cut the mortises too big for the loose tenon and glued the centre one leaving the others dry.

How did you allow for expansion on this?
Leave the corners of the banding unglued so that it can open and close?

Hi Toby,
The top is held to the rails with dominoes seated in wide mortises with no glue. This allows some movement.
This is the third table I've made in the last 7 years with identical set ups, using RG and Huon. I have had no problems with expansion causing breakage or buckling. Our climate is probably a bit milder than some in the US, so there's not so much of a problem.

Rob

Thanks Rob,
The varying humidity here would probably open the joints on the corners, we have to leave plenty of room to move. Excellent work by the way, nice wood, nice tables.
How did you know I was from the US?

Hi Toby,
I lived in Boston for almost 5 years and I guess it's just something intangible that I picked up. I'm usually fairly accurate.
Regards,
Rob
