Blanket Box.
groovy People, here is a blanket box i knocked together using 'Bribie Pine' a type of cypress. The dimensions are 883long 430deep and 380 high (plus the lid). All the half blind dovetails were hand cut. This was a true learning experience trying to cut square and true through 38mm of timber. Each side is a solid slab except the top which had to be joined.
As most people know with cypress it has a tendency to split, and it did. Splits were filled with epoxy and black oxide sanded flush then polished.
The base is tongue and groove notty pine offcuts.
Finishing was done as follows: external
1) 2 sealer coats of shellac + denibbing.
2) 2 coats of shellac applied with a rubber + denibbing.
3) 2 coats of poly-u applied with a rubber.
4) eee wax then normal wax + final buff.
5) massage for painful arms!
internal recieved only sealer coat of shellac and wax.

Just me but she would look great with a distressed look, a few dents and dings and some dirty finish to give it an aged look.

Straight to the Rustic Room... 38mm sides and the design of the box, definetly Rustic.
A don't mind that style at all, and I reckon Ruffly will be impressed as well.
Good stuff, pity the photo's are a bit blurry, I'd like to see more.
Bribie Pine ? Whats it like?

Clinton, Bribie pine is not bad to work with. It is a lot better than radiata pine but about the same amount of brittleness to be found. The knots seemed to be all tight and ofcouse there was plenty of reversing grain. I found a scraper plane worker beautifully on this particular species. Tight grain that took a polish well. It was cheap so I'm happy with the overall outcome. Damien.

Hey Damien!! Ver Nice Work!
I really like the natural-shaped edge and how it seems you've followed that on the bottom front of the box.
Must have been fun cutting those dovetails, but they look great!!
Cheers

The dovetails were a real pain to cut and chisel. Correction cutting was easy but chiseling was a serious drama. Although you know I have some reasonable chisels, half blind d/t are ####ty. I like it though. The interior has the lovely cypresssyyyy smell. Hopefully the insects will dislike it. Damien.
