    Default Blanket chest - WIP

Since my zigzag chair is on hold while I wait for some more Techniglue, I decided to start on my next project, a blanket chest. I found a design in FWW #129, which looked ideally suited for adaptation to Domino joinery. The original design calls for curly maple panels set in cherry frames, with the legs serving as the stiles. I am using jarrah instead of cherry, and silver ash for the panels. So far I have just made the legs (see picture below), cutting all 32 mortices, routing the grooves for the panels, and chamfering the corners in a couple of hours this afternoon.

This morning I cut the grooves for the panels and all 48 mortices in the jarrah frame members between breakfast and smoko. One of the end pieces for the top has an interesting feature, see pic below, which, had it been in a rock, a geologist would call a tension gash. I believe this was caused by wind damage to the tree while it was still alive. I thought it was worth retaining the piece rather than discarding it, but others might think it is a discordant distraction.

For repetitive marking out of mortice centre-lines I find a Veritas marking square very useful, but it looks as though Lee Valley has dicontinued it, since I don't see it in their catalogue now. I suppose a combination square would do the same job, but not so conveniently.

Incra has something similar but you have to get the pencil in the right slot each time.

Aaaaargh - mixed up the panels and cut the front panel too short. Never mind; the chest will just have to be 20 mm shorter:mad:

I can't begin to tell you how much better you've just made me feel
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Fortunately, I have had no more opportunities to make Gumby feel good, and the blanket chest is done, apart from fitting the hinges and applying the finish. The silver-ash panels are a bit bland compared with the bird's-eye maple of the original design, but I am hoping the finish will bring out the grain a bit.

Since the design is fairly simple, and the joinery was done by domino, the project didn't take too long to get to this stage - maybe about 35 hours, but an efficient worker, who had fewer senior moments, could probably improve that time markedly.

    Hello David,

Given the utility of the piece, I think that the simple lines and tasteful timber selection are just right. Once again, a wonderfully simple, but masterful, piece!'

Edit: Green missiles would have been sent, had it not been for the redoubtable forum genie so it will have to be a virtual one

    Auld expressed my sentiments admirably.

    Greenie launched. (I don't believe in djinn's. )

I know everyone has been going on and on about the domino, but this project by Rocker (well done by the way) is concrete proof that I gotta get one! It makes my method for making mortise and tenons (i.e. with router and tablesaw) look a farce.

    So Rocker

You going to tell the Mrs. she has to learn to fold the blankets 20 mm shorter or are you just gunna let me take that piece of rubbish off your hands??? I think my Mrs. would take to re-learning how to fold blankets that bit shorter better than yours!!!!

Seriously though that is one beautiful piece of artwork mate. Well done.

Very nice, Rocker. My uni student daughter has asked for something similar for her place, and you've again been a great inspiration. Love the edge on the front panels.

Thumbs up simple, subtle and beautiful

I hate seeing work like this !

It makes me see how much better i should do and also makes me want to buy expensive machinery (aka domino)!

Seriously, love the combinataion of the timber, it really does work. Also love the discreete curvature in the bottom rail, very retro.

    Good work !

    Tex,

The panel was raised using MLCS's cove raised panel bit #8687. I usually use a vertical raised panel bit for smaller panels, but did not relish standing panels this long vertically on the router table.
