Bookcase
Just thought i would show you all the bookcase i just finished for my niece at the request of her mother.
Its made of pine (by request, i tried to get her to have tassie oak at least but everything else in her bedroom was made of pine!!!) and is basically a straight copy from plans in Australian Woodsmith #5.
It gave me a chance to hone my skills on dovetails(draws), mortice and tennons(just about everywhere) and sliding half dovetails(shelves).
Bit rough in spots but overall came out ok. Although not a patch on some of the amazing stuff that gets posted on these forums.

Hi Spokeshave,
I like the design, I'll have to keep an eye out for that issue of the magazine.
How did you do the dovetails? By hand or machine? If you used a machine/jig, which one?
Cheers,
Nathan.

"a bit rough in spots"? not from what I can see, lovely work!
Is that the receiver's house or the makers house? Either way it fits in.
Greenie sent, keep up the great work,
Fletty

Thanks all for the kind comments, i guess the photos must flatter the end result.
The issue of Australian Woodsmith i got the design from is #5 and available on backorder on thier website. I also like the design and was one one of two or three i showed the SIL to choose from.
The dovetails were made on a cheap chinese jig but i made my own comb as the original was not flat and made it just about impossible to get good results. I have attached a photo of mine below.
That is the makers house and the more it sits there (haven't delivered it yet) the more i like it and want to keep it. I guess it's got to go one day.
Thanks again for the encouragement, much appreciated.
Steven.

Thanks Steven. I've got a very similiar jig and am having some teething problems with it (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=52294).
Looking at how yours have come out, I'm encouraged to get back out in the shed and fiddle with it some more.
And I will order that issue of the magazine to get those plans.
Thanks again,
Nathan.

That is a good looking bookcase Spokeshave.
Congratulations.
Those dovetail jigs are a real trial.
After many tedious experiences with mine I upgraded to a Leigh.
Now I enjoy making dovetails.Scally

I had a real hard time getting good results from my jig and after replacing the comb, they improved. The original was pressed aluminium and curved across the top from front to back causing the router to wobble about during the cut. Not the best for good results.
As mentioned in your link Nathan by cyco, I downloaded the pdf from Australian Woodsmith and this helped. But it took alot of trial cuts to get the set up correct. These jigs aren't very user friendly. I spent practically an entire weekend and a shed load of timber to get it right. Downside is that i have the thing set up for 19mm thick timber and i'm too scared to change it for any other size in case i bugger up the setup.
I would love to upgrade to a Leigh Scally (so much better and easier to use) but at the moment a new thicknesser is on the cards so i'll have to wait for that one. Maybe a jointer aswell. And a new sawbench.......
Thanks all, Steven.
