Latest Box
G'day All,
The latest edition Sunshine box in progress.
Timber is circa 1909 camphor and it has come up a treat through the planner.
If you have seen any of the other boxes I have made you will notice the new and improved sunrays design. Will be hard to top camphor as a material for future works but the shavings and off cuts will keep the moths out of the shed........not so the wallet
cheers

Another nice one. Love camphor!

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Junkboy,
Fortunatley I have hit the mother lode! A Farmer in the wheatbelt here in WA
has taken to collecting these and now there is plenty of work to be done. He is keeping one step ahead of the scrap metal dealers.
Gazaly, thanks mate, might need you round to clean up the shed but
Thanks for all the coments

Seriously though, can you explain a bit of the history behind these boxes? It's not something I've knowingly seen before!

Gaz,
I first saw a box made from the old ends about 10 yrs ago at a shop my uncle took me to in Subiaco which sold works by hobby woodworkers and artists, I don't know if it still operates. I had a set of ends at home which came off our farm at the time and I had them bolted to the wall under the patio as plaques, just as they were, a rusty colour. Anyway I thought then I would make a box out of them one day, which I did and to make them a bit more interesting I decided to put the logo on the front. I then showed a couple of guys at work ( mostley country people being a grain terminal ) who had access to farmers and some of them got hold of the ends. As there are so many different make I just put the different logos and things on them.
The ends themselves are very ornate and the manufacturers took to casting them with writing on probabley as a form of advertising. I researched some makes on the net and they have been around from the late 1800's to about the 1950's.
I have posted this pic before, this a seed drill intact that the ends come of, I don't remember what make though.
Hope this answers your question mate,
