    Donna,

    The box is gorgeous!
This might sound like a stupid question, but how did you shape the legs?
    Are they hand carved?

The legs were cut out on a bandsaw first, then I shaped them using files and then sandpaper. If you look at this post http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ad.php?t=72050 you will see pics of another box I made, with some pics of the legs roughed out on the bandsaw. Little legs are much harder to cut out neatly on the bandsaw than big ones.

Thanks for the informative reply Donna.
I ADORE the little box in the May thread.
I've just done a little woodcarving to date. You're inspiring me to branch out!

Wow.. this is absolutely amazing... I've been surfing this forum for a few days now, registered just to comment on these absolutely inspiring pieces...

I hope soon enough I'll be working on my desk, but nothing as extravagant is this!

Oh, and with it oiled, it's absolutely beautiful!

Donna, that is a beautiful box. Thanks for showing us it.

This is a really silly question, I am afraid, but may I ask how you applied the oil, please?

I just sloshed it on with a rag, and went back over it after 15mins or so and wiped off the excess, then did it again the next day. Cant remember but probably gave it a rub with fine steel wool or wetndry, as I usually do, but this often depends what I actually have here at home at the time. After a day or so I put on the traditional wax and polish it up.

Donna, I've just come back to this thread - I'd forgotten it.
It's hard to get the proportion of cabriole legs right, especially when they're short, but you've hit it with that piece. Lovely result all round.

Thanks for your lovely comments. I really enjoyed making this box, it sort of evolved a little from its conception. I cant wait till we get the house built and not so much stuff pulling at my time, so I can make some more variations of this theme.

I originally thought of the idea a few days before I was due to leave for Townsville, and started the construction of it. The domed lid was not in the original plan, it had a flip up flat lid in my first plan. I got all the bits cut out, and the legs were cut out on the bandsaw, with one finished to its final shape, and the mortices were all done. I wrapped ti all up and presented it to mum for her birthday with the promise that I would finish it "one day" I told her that she shouldnt think herself so special that she wouldnt have to wait like everyone else has for my creations, like, Dad had to wait for several years before I finished his cabriole leg stool and my son had to wait a couple of years for his bed. Gave her a good old chuckle, and everyone else too, bit of a family joke.

When i got back to making it, I looked at it and decided that it needed something special for the lid, and tried to think what would look nice and suit the legs. I thought of those highboys? dont know what they are called, usually got a shell carved on them and curved top with sort of scrolls? well, thats where the curve of the dome idea came from.

    to be continued......

The best part of making the box came with the delivery.

I told mum that I was posting it to her, and told her that she was not allowed to open it until we were both on Skype so I could see her unwrap it. HE HE HE!!!!!

So, on the day it arrived she had to sit on her hands and WAIT for me to get on the computer. It was so much fun, isnt technology wonderful, here I am in the South Burnett in Southern Qld and Mum up in Townsville, and I can watch and hear her opening her present. It was sooo funny, I really wrapped it well. Mum is there trying to open up the box which had ample amounts of sticky tape on it, and Dad couldnt control himself any longer and had to get in there too, all of us laughing our heads off, sooo funny, packing everywhere. A very rewarding episode. The pic is a snapshot taken via skype of mum opening the box.

You are a darling daughter, as are so many daughters, and you chose your Mum and Dad well!

    Thanks for a lovely post.
