Default A new box with cabriole legs, this ones for mum

I started making this in July for my mums birthday. It just needs sanding, something made for the inside (lining, partitions or something). It is to be used to put her make-up in. I will oil it with Tung oil, and it is made of New Guinea red cedar It is 230mm wide at its widest and 170mm tall. It is just a lift off lid.

    Cant wait to oil it.

Looks lovely. The legs look just the right size, gives it a 'special' look and feel.

    Well done

I cut a board 450mm x 150mm x 30mm thick. Jointed it, drew half of the lid shape on the endgrain (lid has join in the middle), jointed the angle of the join on one side, then using the tablesaw I slowly and methodically ripped it up to the drawn lines. Then I filed and sanded and sanded and sanded till I got the inside shape, then cut it in half to give me the two sides, then glued it up and finished the outside. The inside has a lip that forms a rebate that holds the lid in position. I am very nervous and wary of the tablesaw so this was a breakthru for me. When I get real confident I might even try coving on the saw, but probably not.

Nice job, Donna, you've done a great job on shaping the lid.
Coving isn't as bad as you might think, you can only take out a small amount at a time, no more than the depth of the tips on the saw blade.

Well now its had a couple of coats of Tung oil and a quick buff with some wax. I havent done anything with the inside yet, but mum doesnt want any partitions, so I will probably just make a removable liner for it.

Donna, you have such a good eye for these type of legs. I cannot fault the line, shape or proportion one little bit (not that I'm trying)

The finish looks good. I do like it. I hope you don't mind if this box of yours makes it's way into my sincere flattery file.

    cheers
