Default A small Box Photo story

Here is a box I made to hold a multimeter for our daughter’s other half. It was made from recycled timber (pictured) and simply hand dovetailed and finished using U Beaut Hard Shellac, U Beaut EEE Wax and finally U Beaut traditional wax.

It is not my best work, the reason I have posted it is because some members of the Bulletin Board have asked questions about re-sawing, cutting dovetails by hand, making boxes and finishing. I don’t pretend to be an expert in any of these areas but I have heaps of fun mucking around.

The top has a piece of redgum glued in it for decoration. this is the first time I have tried doing this after reading about it in a book on boxes.

The aim of this thread is to encourage those starting out to get in and have a go. Feel free to criticise the box and my methods. It took about six interrupted hours to make.

    OK that's it folks.

I know it's long but it may be of some value to somebody.

    Nice one !

Thanks for such a well illustrated sequence.

Excuse my ignorance, but is there a reason behind mixing different sized dovetails ? Is it purely for aesthetic purposes ?

Spot on John. I guess I do it because I can and anyway you don't have to lay them out equally!

Looks great. I bet your daughters other half doesn't come across too many of his co workers with a fancy case like that.

This is a great guide, only needs to be supplemented by some perspicacious commentary.

Nice job, Borer. I have a real thing that just because a box is for utilitarian purposes, doesn't mean it can't be a thing of beauty.
(Do I have enough double negatives in there?)

My daughter made herself a wooden clarinet case because she didn't like plastic. 15 years down the track, people still ask where she bought it.

    Thanks Alex,

I agree, if you make a good box it not only protects the equipment, it looks good and it gives you pleasure both making it and seeing it in use.

I made the box last Saturday and I wasn't sure if I should post the photos or not because people who regularly do woodwork would yawn or find all the faults but then I thought of those who ask how do you cut your dovetails so I took the plunge.

If I get time, I will write details if that's what people would like.

Nice work Brother Wood, but did you realy have to include a piccy of the LN plane, particularly as I'm led to believe that you have a number of them. I'm green with envy mate.

What sort of recycled timber is it made from Mr B?

How did you cut the slot for the inlay?

    Cheers
    Craig
