    Default More boxes

    G'day all,

After having recovered, somewhat , from an excellent evening with some friends that came over for a BBQ at my place last week-end, and whilst mulling over some details for the next major project, I decided to cobble up a couple of boxes - one for my desk at work, and one because I couldn't think of anything else to do with a small hunk of Camphor Laurel that I had.

The little desk box's basic construction is mitred blackwood, with redgum visible tenons instaed of the normal dovetails. The lid is amboyna, and the bottom is a piece of ply veneered with American cedar. The insert "egg-crate" is of red gum also.

The other box is conventionally made, with dovetailed carcass made from camphor laurel, and a piece of amboyna floating in the lid.

Just visible, though, on the inside of the lid of the camphor laurel box, is evidence of a traditional Auld Bassoon stuff up. Also, I won't mention the first lid that I attempted for the desk box...

Finishing, in both cases, was Danish Oil followed by uBeaut waxes.

    Cheers!

Very classy boxes. Nice design, and some spectacular woods. Good idea integrating the meters into the lid.

Could you have run that figure continuously around the mitre on the other lid?

Never heard of amboyna, but it looks really good.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

Nice work Steve. A bit of time in the shed always blows away the cobwebs.

    G'day Zenwood,

With the very limited stock that I had of the CL, and wanting to keep the grain running around so that I could plane it more easily - well, a craftsman probably could...

The Amboyna was some left over from the drawer fronts of the wine cabinet (the top of which can be seen in the pics); it's from S.E. Asia, mostly Laos and Cambodia I believe. Got my piece from Carba-Tec here in Melbourne! They generally have a few pieces.

    Cheers!
