    Default My Budget Bench

Santa brought me some goodies from Veritas this year
I used the holidays to make a new bench, which is much needed.
The bench had to be made on a budget, so no hardwood top and legs Only hardwood is the trim.

The leg frame is held together with double tenons and wedges in each joint. The top is simply planed flat and glued together. the top is about 1800x700. The end trim is pinned with hardwood dowels, the center dowel only being guled and slightly offset. Basic Taiwanese vise, Plenty of dog holes, and a wee shelf (when I have time, I'll put some drawers in there)
The top is fixed to the leg frame with metal dowels, to prevent it moving. The top can be removed if needed.

Finished with a few coats of my mix of: 1 part gloss varnish, 1 part tung oil, 1 part thinners.
    Now time to abuse it
    Thanks for looking.

Looks far from budget to me, great job!

Any particular reason why you went for that style of base(the traditional style feet)?

Does that kind of base tend to rock more if your floors are not dead flat as opposed to having just four posts in contact with the ground?

You don't want to see what I use as a bench, so I'm just curious before I go building one......one day

    Hi Martrix,
The wood is as budget as I could buy, thats why I called it budget

I used the traditional style leg frame mainly because I like the traditional look, its a tried and tested frame, its solid with the double tenons and wedges.
You cant see because of all the shavings about the place, but the middle of the bottom cross sections are raised by about half an inch. They are Only in contact with the floor, up to the inner edge of the legs. I guess there is more potential for it to wobble, as there is more in contact with the floor.
I did a dry fit, in the area it would be living before I glued and wedged it, to see how much the floor was out. It was slightly out (ive never seen a flat concrete floor), so I moved it along the concrete abit until it was sitting soild.
    cheers for the comments

Very nice looking unit. Hope you'll get lots of pleasure out of it.

I'm really glad I got my bench done, with lots of dog-holes. Made my woodworking much more enjoyable...

On a Budget! That's a great bench. Crikey mate I've got to show the one I'm gonna make soon. Now that'll be budget that's for sure.
