cabinet for fish tank
Have been putting this off for months but have just finished my first bit of "cabinet making" - a hoop pine bookshelf / cabinet which houses a 3' fish tank.
The wife calls me "Mr 90%" due to my "near enough is good enough" approach, but I took my time with this one and have ended up with all right angles... There are no dove-tails in this lot, but I am, after all, a beginner.
Used Brimsboard hoop pine veneer for carcass and doors, hoop pine edge veneer (iron-on), recessed cabinet hinges and 3x3 pine and metal strap bracing (plus ply rear for additional bracing) to provide the strength for the fish tank (which weighs about 160kg). No sag whatsoever when the tank was filled - phew. Built it to fit some inexpensive baskets.
Finished with 2 coats batt estapol then scandinavian teak oil. A nice smooth finish and quite hard wearing, with good woodgrain definition, however it made the hoop pine go from its nice white colour to a yellow shade, which was a bit disappointing, as I had gotten used to the bare white colour.
Next... a TV cabinet. Might even do some more complex joints, or biscuit the doors - But I need to find a finish which won't yellow the timber... any ideas out there?

Well done,
I've already pinched the photos to try to get the Son-In-Law inspired!
Cheers,

Looks good mate, I like the way you have enclosed the fiash tank behind the doors to hide the pipes and light and filter and the like.

yeah that was the wife's choice - it's between a purple and a maroon room, and believe it or not is the most subtle colour of the three...
