    Default Cafe de Parrot

Bird feeder that SWMBO wanted, only on a temporary stand. Made from WRC, the middle section of the roof lifts off for filling.
As you can see we have attracted Rainbow Lorrikeets and we also get a lot of Eastern Rosellas, but they are very shy and hard to photograph.

This is all in the middle of suburbia.

As you can see, the birds have put s... on my work so feel free to do so.

I was a bit against domestic feeding of wild birds for fear of creating a dependance, but the National parks and Wildlife mob recommend feeding particularly in drought conditions.

I only put out Sunflower seeds as I found mixed seed attracted all sorts of riff raff like Indian Mynahs.

looking good termite. you may want to ration the feed otherwise the lorries will eat until they die... (not kidding)

attracting rainbow lorrikeets to a bird feeder is about as hard as attracting drunks to free beer

we have some lorries that rule our joint (aggressive little terds they are )

if you want some other birds such as rosies or kingies you need to get rid of the lorries - they are far more aggressive and take over the place if you let them. Our local lorries have no problems taking on the currawongs and cockies... (did I mention they are aggressive little terds yet?) if you want to keep the lorries and the cockies more at bay can I suggest you make sure the feed you give them has few if any sunflower seeds ? (its like bird chocolate!!!)

WRC - will the cockies tear into that ? I assume its relatively soft timber... does look good though.

Yes, the Rainbows are agressive little buggers, travel in packs and take no s... from anyone. The Rosellas were the first to come and seem to be holding their own at the moment.

The Rainbows are quite happy with the nectar from our Grevillias and Bottlebrush and seem to just use the seed for dessert.

I'll trade you four 28's (green ones) for two rainbow lorikeets.

We are getting a good variety of local birdlife coming to our yard now too. I reckon its great sitting outside with a beer watching their antics in the evening.

Good looking feeder there Termite, you won't be short of visitors with that.

Here are a few pics of our friends....

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonay in one hand - Strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming - "WOO WOO...What a ride"

Nice bird 'shat-o' there Termite, seems to local birds appreciate it even tho they are sh..in all over it.

Place im renting is pretty baron for trees and shrubs, just a few of them ugly coco's palms. Might have to confiscate the bird house I made for the MIL and see if that attracts anything. Its currently just laying on the ground beside their shed..

Neil, looks like we were singing from the same songbook when we built the feeders. As you can see I went for the plain jane version.
Love those WA birds, don't think we have them over here.

I think thats the only way I am going to see them as well - 3 cats that we adopted make a good job of de-mousing our house but the birds for some reason don't like hanging around.

    Hi Termite,

Looks like that "cafe" is now the avian equivalent of "Red Arches"

Nice job, BTW - and nice to bring the wildlife in to the 'burbs.

The only wildlife in the SE Melbourne 'burbs are on two legs and come from...ahhh! I'll stop about there

    Cheers!
