    Default Cajon Production

    This is my latest Cajon.
It is posted in the Musical Instruments section but thought some others might like to see the Zebrano.

The timber is hard and brittle and as you can see it had lots of flaws.
They were filled with 5 minute epoxy and black oxide.

It was fine to work but I used backing boards when dovetailing incase they chipped out.
It finishes well. I used several coats of Livos oil. The orange smell covered the 'morning after' smell of the timber.

The light coloured timber is quartersawn Celery top pine. It is planed down to about 4 - 6mm thick to use as a drumming face.

The other side is Walnut burl veneer over 0.8mm ply. This make a deeper sounding drum face.
I used Titebond III for the veneers and lots of cauls.

If you don't need a drum , it makes a convenient coffee table beside a lounge chair.

    Thanks Scott

That is exactly the effect I was after.

I made it for Afro Moses who is a musician from Ghana - sometimes called the Lion of Ghana.

I am working on adding some tynes across the soundhold to add another sound.

Enjoy Christmas and maybe Santa will bring you a Domino.

    Default Price?

    Scally

How much would you charge for one of these or something similar?

Also can I ask where you got your timber?

    Cheers

I get my timber from all the regular places.....Trend and Anagote in Sydney and Boutique Timbers.
They all have some nice timbers.

I like the look of solid timber but they do make the cajon a fair bit heavier than the standard ones.

Making the box out of ply cuts the weight down. That is what most of the commercially sold ones are made out of.

You can buy food cajons for around $400. I would want more for good pieces of timber.

They all sound similar. It just depends what you like.

    Hi Scally,
a few thoughts on cajons if you will.
My first attempt at such a device, so feel free to disrupt my faulty thought paths

First some details. Most of which were determind by what I had in the shed when I got this crazy idea.
    top n bottom 19mm pine 290x290
boo side, 15mm bamboo floor boards 3 glued together. 290x480
pine side,19mm 290x480 (had a large knot middle bottom which I will make into the air port)
    back 6mm ply 290x480
front Melamine covered masonite 3.2mm 290x480
Snare, bass guitar strings, probably just the D and G others might be too thick.

I have ended up rebating sides and top and bottom. No internal battons or supports.

The back will simply screw on the back as will the front.
Im leaving the back in front screwed because Ill want the access to play/modify/change/learn etc.

The idea of different type sides was two fold, thats what I had and I wanted a different sound from side hits. I also wanted(who thas 3 isnt it) something thick I could mount brackets too in case I start putting "gadgets" on.

Note I have placed(will place) the sound hole on the side.. this mainly because the pine had a knot hole(20c piece) there already. I possibly could seal this up and put the hole at the back in the ply as per normal. thoughts?

Im after a little snare and deep bass.

    Front:
I made a tambor once and I recall from that experience the rim was best with a bevel creating only a small bearing where the the skin had contact with wood.
I was wondering if this was worth trying on the 3.2mm masonite "skin". To me having a 19mm wide rim is surely deadening the vibration quality of the skin? I thought a slight bevel on the rim would cause two things to happen. The initial contact point will be the bevel and thus nicely defined not some point across the 19mm where the screw holds it.Also screwing on the "other side of the bevel' would force the skin into a slightly convex curve thus making it tighter?
Snare: Not sure whether to go with the inverted V or the harp like across the top corners.

Gadgets: woodblock. Was thinking of a hand pedal on the pine side that activated a stick(with wooden ball on the end) to hit the boo side. The boo has a nice woodblock sound like this (open anyway).
footbass. something that will thump a beater against the rear ply.

    Interested in your thoughts.
currently the sides n top bottom are at glue stage
