    Default Camphor Laurel Coffee/Side Table

    Hi All,

have to firstly say I am very new at trying to build anything, and even though I have been on the site several times looking for tips and useful information etc, this is my first post. So as a 'newbie', hi from the Gold Coast also!
I have been doing a far bit of 'trial and error' on a couple of pieces I've been working on, all with mixed results, but here is a pic or two of my favourite coffee table I have had a go at, to date so far.
There is a 'before' pic, as it was when I 1st bought it, and after an initial sanding, and then a couple of the finished product.
It is Camphor Laurel, with matching legs, and is coated only in clear satin out of a can! Then a little wax, followed by a coating of furniture polish. I tried with clear gloss and a brush, but could not finish it properly without leaving either brush or sanding marks, even with different grits of paper etc?? I'll put that down to me being a bit green and not having enough patience yet!!
I call it the 'WAVE' table, as it reminds me of a wave rolling up onto a sandy beach. I positioned the front leg so it follows the angle of the curve of the wave, and also because it gives it a more of a contemporary or edgey look. I didn't think just standard straight legs at both ends would suit it...

Anyway, hope you like it, and any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated... Cheers!

Looks great from down here. Welcome to the forum. I agree with the positioning of the legs, it wouldn't have looked right with four square legs.

that's a solid chunk of timber, I wouldn't like to kick my toe on it. The colour looks fantastic. how did you go with any skin or breathing reactions while sanding. I have some trunks sitting out on the depot block that have to be slabbed yet. thanks for posting and once again looks Great.

Thats a real beauty mate. The finish on the live edge looks great.

I done something similar not long ago and really struggled with the finish on the live edge.

    Talking Thanks All :)

Thanks for all your replies everyone. As I mentioned, took a lot of trial and error but am finally getting to know how to come up with the goods, I hope!?
Thanks Alan, hope to be around for a while and cheers re the legs, at least that was ONE thing that wet right for me on the 1st attempt!
No, no allergic reactions yet Opel, and can still breathe! Got to learn to use the masks and earmuffs VERY quickly!! And cheers for your appreciation...
Thanks Dai, a pleasure to join the ranks, mate. You live very close to me, I'm GC Hinterland, might have to catch up and say g'day and see all these spare slabs you have one day soon...??!
And, the edges are a combo of clear 'gloss', Shane, as was the rest of the table originally, and a few coats of the satin spray I eventually used on the rest of the table, after not being able to get the finish I wanted with the gloss. I could re-sand and re-do the bulk of the table, but the edges would have proved a bit more difficult to get into ! But yeah, I like how they came out in the end. Thanks mate

Once again, cheers all, and hope to see you 'round the traps...
