Carved drums
The drums are made from Blackbutt staves.
I liked the look of the Gecko I etched into the big Dundun in the last photo so thought I would use it on the new drums.
The first drum has the gecko outline carved into the drum with a dremel carbide bit. Then I blackened the carved area with Black Japan.
On the second drum I carved most of the gecko into the drum but left a scribble ridge down the centre. Then blackened the low section.
A light mix of Danish oil and estapol has been put on both drums to protect the carvings and bring out the honey colour of the Blackbutt.
The third drum is having a relief carved gecko. This is a lot more work and the coarse blackbutt is proving a pain to try and get any finer detail.
The three dark dunduns are previous efforts. On the front drum with the dancers, I blackened the carvings with a black texta.
These drums were stained and given a light Danish oil finish.Scally

I was too impatient with the carving.
It looks better from a distance.
The three drums look a good set with their Geckos and the Danish oil finish.
The bearing edges for the skin have been shaped to 45 degrees on the inside and a round over on the outside.
Next are the four steel rings for each drum. I have cut them all to length and rolled them into reasonable circles. The to get more welding practice.Scally

Nice one Harry.
It is good therapy beating drums.
My friend who I am making the drums for, is coming around this afternoon to check on their progress.
My welding is improving so I wont need to do too much work with the angle grinder.
I can't get a cow skin anywhere! Have people stopped eating beef?
Hopefully one of the suppliers will get one soon. I am keen to get them finished and to see how they look and sound.Scally
