Smile Chairs WIP - Back Slats

I was gonna laminate the back slats for the dining chairs but it will take ages well as waste a heap of timber. I ended up cutting them from a solid piece of Silver Ash.

I used the same sort of jig setup as damienhazo shows in this thread Thanks Damien!!

I firstly cut all the pieces on the bandsaw so they were 2.5mm oversize.
Then it was a simple matter of having the first jig setup to take off 1.25mm & the second to do the same to arrive at the finished size of 12.7mm.

Quite a good finish that will require minimal sanding! once they are sawn in half & docked to length.

All in all I'm quite pleased. Although........ I was routing a piece that had a few drying checks in it & it just exploded!   talk about brown pants!!
I'm still finding little bits of timber all over the workshop.
    Cheers

    Major,

I don't see why laminating them would have taken ages, or used more wood. Once you have the laminations cut, you can just glue them up one backslat at a time and let them cure overnight. It would take 32 days; but then you started these chairs a year ago I would worry that solid-wood backslats with that sort of curvature might break.

    Hey Tassie,

I got the router bit from Carba-Tec, I gotta say the CMT bits are very good!

    Thanks for reminding me Rocker!!
I'm pretty sure the slats will be strong enough, I don't have to worry about kids destroying them.

Comin' on like a gutsache Major. I love silver ash, & I reckon once they're sanded & oiled they'll look fantastic. Keep going, you're on a roll.

Well done mate! Love those bottom-bearinged router bits. I buy mine from Trend and can't complain...
