Cheese Board (design from Fine Woodworking website)
I saw an interesting design for a chopping board on the Fine Woodworking website, and thought I'd have a go an using the methodology to make a smaller cheese board.
I think it turned out nicely. What do others think?
Process is relatively simple, using a router template to create the curve, then a bandsaw to cut the board into two pieces, then a pattern bit to remove the excess waste. Last step is to sandwich thin strips between the two halves and clamp it together. The video on the Fine Woodworking site shows how it's done.

Main timber is oregon, from some old roofing timbers that were around 100 years old when I got them. Highlights are walnut and ???.

Nice work!
I saw the video last week and was thinking that I'd make one when I get a chance.
What finish did you use?

Hi Andy,
The finish is Ubeaut's Foodsafe finish. It's a mineral oil that wipes on - first time I've used it. Easy to use and leaves a nice finish on the board.
Wil you be around Sydney this week? I'd love to check out your new equipment.

Re: Cheese Board (design from Fine Woodworking website)
I've been meaning to try that finish so I'll give it a go.
I'm going to be in Sydney on Thursday afternoon until Monday. I'll send you a PM.

That is so much better than plain! Besides the food treats, it's good to see a focal point of interest in the board, itself. Did you put feet under it?
Hmmmmmm. Methinks birch for my board and a mix of mahogany & rosewood for the accents. Hmmmmmm.

Hi RV, no I haven't put feet under it. Still pondering about this, but leaning to giving it some feet. Please post pics of your board if you make one.
cheers,

I will, like a hundred other things I'd like to make. Actually, about #8 on my list.
I figure I'll get the birch board organized then bandsaw the wavy squiggle. Have some rough sawmill cut 50 x 150mm birch. Joint one edge, fold and glue up.
Steam heat the rosewood and mahogany strips. Clamp up the whole business hot and wet to use the birch for a jig. Let it sit for 2 weeks. I can buy packets of little rubber feet & screws which seem to be meant for such projects.
I laminated rosewood and mahogany for handles for some crooked-knife wood carving tools, they look quite good.
Your big strip of 5 plys looks 'right.'
