Cherry/Walnut Wall Cabinet
This is a cherry and walnut wall cabinet that I am still working on for my sister. I also wanted to try a few different things so I used a walnut crotch veneer applied to baltic birtch substate for the back and then used a French Polish finish. The shelf, hinge beading and handles are all walnut. The cabinet casing is all cherry cureentl being finished in Danish oil prior to a final wax buffing. The doors were intentionally left with a gap to produce a peek-a-boo affect. The pictures don't show how you can just get a peek of the walnut veneer as you look at the cabinet head on. I did do a design mock-up prior the final version, but I would still change the thickness of the base and look for a better cherry grain for the doors. It looked ok on the mock-up but as the time has past I had different thoughts.
The cabinet is all hand planed with the top and bottom being joined to the sides with dowels. The shelf is joined with a spline. The back of the substrate has a cherry veneer for the comple affect and will be attached with cherry pegs flush cut. I must admit that I am using a 1000 grit sandpaper between coats of Danish oil.

I like the veneer result, did you cut that. More info on the veneer process would be great.
Cheers

The walnut veneer was from a lot that a friend was going to throw away. It is all booked matched in sequence and roughly measures 8" x 28". I joined them together and then attached it to the baltic birch ply substrate with a lot of clamps and cauls (I don't have a veneer press or a vaccum press). I did the back of the substrate in a cherry veneer so that the whole cabinet case would appear to be complete cherry.

Throw it away glad you saved it, great work patience is a virtue.
