Chess Board
A few weeks ago I read about someone making a chess board. Something I had always wanted to do but didn't know how without making losts of pieces and trying to stick them together.
Here is my WIP of my board.
It is cheesewood and blackwood veneered onto a ply base. The surrounds are blackwood but not yet glued up. I still have to plane then down level with the board and do some profiling to the bottom of the edges to give the feet some shape.
Hopefully I will be ready to apply the finish this weekend which will be hard shellac and traditional wax. I am undecided whether to leave the under side of the board as is or veneer on some more timber to make it look finished. I know no one will look but I will know.

Hi growl
Veneer it. Even ply can grow/shrink and can therefore warp. The backing veneer will ensure that the top and bottom grow at the same rate.
PS remember to seal the bottom too.Bob Willson

At last it is finished with five coats of hard shellac and followed by eee then traditional wax.
The first game I played on it was against my son who beat me fair and square for the first time.

I like the inlaid strips, well done! I can never get 'em to quite match properly at all four corners.

Beautiful, Greg - love the grain in the timbers, the finish, the inlaid strip - it looks very classy.
Cheers,
