chess / coffee table i made
Hi im new to the forum and just wanted to share somthing i finished last year. just got me thinking when i read that veneer craft may have burnt down. thats where i got these veneers from.
the project was my finishing piece or my apprenticeship.i got the lord of the rings chess set made of pewter for my birthday (weighs a tone). veneers are mardrona burl and rock maple with box wood stringing and brizilian mahogany for legs and drawers plywood top and side but that had to happen...took about 300 hours to make in my spare time.veneer was all hand laid with animal glue including all the squares they expanded about 3 to 4 mm each one i laid. all joint where hand cut. there were a lot of technical aspects to this project it was really challenging and fun to make and the end result was awesome i thought.

Awesome indeed Bryan.
Great workmanship, you should be very proud of that.
Shame you are so far away, otherwise I'd give you a game, would be great to play on such a nice table and with such a nice looking chess set.
Have a greenie.

Must be up there with the best pieces of work on the forum. The design is great, and a lovely choice of timbers. Those leg joints must have been interesting to cut. The tightness of the hand-cut joinery looks very impressive all-round.
Thanks for posting. Look forward to seeing more of your work. Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

yeah it was a challenging piece to make but with sharp tools everything becomes a lot easyer.all the solid was out of one big piece and i only just had enough there was no room for error with cutting joints but that made it more fun...

Absolutely lovely work. I don't play chess these days but wouldn't mind a piece like that just for show.
Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

You have created one of the best pieces I've seen in a long time. The design, proportions and choice of veneers make it a true collectors piece
You say this was part of your apprenticeship. Can I ask how old are you.
Hope you don't mind I've saved your pics to my database of pictures for inspiration - right along side such names as Chippendale and William & Mary
