Chess Set
HI,
im 17 years old and a self taught woodworker for 6 years now and i just finally joined the forum hoping to get some thoughts on this from the pros
I finished this chess set for TAPPS Art Team at school. won first in regional and then won 5th IN STATE!??!?!? to an embroydered pillow... (it was in crafts category due to the fact it was the only category it would fit in)
but im hoping to send it back with a matching table and chairs this time to see if it would do better
opinions on this??
Thanks
JP
linseed oil finish
white pieces are poplar
black pieces are walnut
base for chess board is oak
and those glue spots shown on some of the black pieces were removed
these are the only pics i have a the current time

I've made a couple of chess sets and I'd be more than happy if I could number that amongst 'em. Nice theme, any woody would appreciate it.
Mate, I wouldn't be in the least embarassed at losing to a fancy pillow... I know a helluva lot of very fine work goes into hand embroidery! Now, if a pot of jam or similar had won first place...
Personally, if I was to make table and chairs to go with it, I'd be entering them in the next comp but not the chess set. Judges remember items ya know and, being only human, some will downgrade your score on the basis they've seen it before...
That's my 2c, anyway. [shrug]

Great job JP. You should be proud of your achievement and it will be something to treasure and possibly become a family treasure.
PS: If you have a picture of the cushion, post it so we can rubbish it! Better still post a picture of who ever decided on such silly competition rules in the first place. It's gotta be like deciding who is the best team of athletes between swimmers, footballers and ballet dancers.

Hey JP, welcome to the funny farm
I'm sure you'll enjoy your time on the forum. You'll come across some interesting characters - plus lots of great stuff and advice.
Great job - looks like you have some artistic abilities too - definitely worth a win.
My only comment FWIW is the heads of the pawns could be a little smaller - they appear to dominate the main pieces a little (just my view).
The chairs and table sound like a good challenge - when are we going to see them?
It looks like you have a great many years ahead of you enjoying the workshop.

I tend to agree that the pawns are a bit large/top heavy, but still a very nice job you should be proud of. Welcome aboard.

G'day JP and welcome - nice chess set - if this is the "standard" of your work then the table and chairs should be spectacular.
Any pix of the clock?
Regards,
Bob

Great work on the Chess set, reminds me I must finish the same one I started once I get things settled here after the move.
