Default Chess Set in rare Tassie timbers

    Burl myrtle & birdseye huon board.jpgSet 3 board pieces & box.jpgSet 3 birdseye huon pieces.jpgSet 3 burl myrtle close up.jpgSet 3 queens close up.jpgSet 3 storage box.jpg

As I promised when I introduced myself, here are a few pics of my latest chess set. All timbers are Tasmanian (I get them from Distinctive Timbers in Devonport where I live). This set utilises Birdseye Huon Pine and Burl Myrtle. The pieces are all lead weighted in the base and are compound cut on a scroll saw. The Burl Myrtle is pretty hard and it took a while to find blades that would do the cutting without distortion or burning of the wood. A couple of pics of the scroll saw work added on 22nd as requested by member

    Cheers: Chris

Beautiful "power carving" with the scroll saw. Could I please see a little more of your carving style in the big pieces? K & Q , Knights & Bishops. Please and thank you.

What was your choice of finishes?

Hi Chris, and welcome to the forum

What a beautiful piece of craftmanship. The board and the box both look great and the pieces are very detailed and they look perfect.

    Regards,
    Peter

A most impressive chess set. The timber is very nice and goes well with the design.

Your right about the birdseye huon - I feel really privileged to be working with such beautiful stuff; the combination of the huon and burl myrtle looks fantastic in the flesh.

Your not wrong - there was close to 200 hours all up. With Parkinson's I can't work fast. The tortoise just about describes the pace. It took just on three months to get in the 200 hours. But one thing I have in abundance is time and (fortunately) patience.

Thanks mate. I will add a couple of pics of a piece being cut on the scroll saw; the design of the picee in the extra pics is different, but the cutting technique is the same.

The finish I use is a wax for the pieces and a spray-on cellulose based lacquer for the board and box.

Default Thanks for all the good feedback

It is always nice to get positive feedback on your work; I guess this feeeling is multiplied many times for someone has a chronic disease like Parkinson's. so thanks you all members who have responded. If anyone has a specific question about the timbers or techniques I use don't hesitate to ask.
    cheers
