    Default Christmas presents - 2009

I thought it would be nice to share some pics of pieces you're working on for Christmas gifts this year.

Last year was my first real year woodworking so I didn't make any "timber products" for Christmas, except this bench for my mother. This year I decided to try my hand at some simple cutting boards. Here's what I have so far.

This is the first trial one I made. It's small so probably only good as a coaster/trivet of some kind. Offcuts of some random red woods, vic ash, blackwood and english elm.

I like this one much better although it isn't "end-grain". Hard maple, walnut and a stripe of purple heart in the middle.

A larger, more standard style. Hard maple and walnut.

    Cheers,
    Af.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Thanks artme. I'll be happy to add you to my Christmas list WW but I'm not sure what I could possibly make that would be worthy of your own talents!

So what is everyone else making, planning, thinking of making for gifts this year?

    Cheers,
    Af.

I had to look a few times at the second board, it looks so 3D I didn't know how you were going to cut anything on it. Brilliant job, well done.

    They look great AB.

Did you glue them straight off the saw or joint them first?

Thanks Scally. Glued them straight off the saw. Should I have jointed first you think?

Straight off the saw is great if your saw gives you a clean cut.
Your saw must be well set up and a sharp blade.

If the cut is rough and you can't get a fine glue-line, then you will need to joint them.

Only joint if you need to.

Great chopping boards i love the Hard maple, walnut and a stripe of purple heart one. Imaging that as door panels in a cupboard

#2 is the real stabndout here - just beautiful work

I think #3 looks beautiful in an understaded elegant sort of way - the uneven block sizes make it something special

Haha. Thanks for the comments folks. No 2 isn't all that hard to rig up once you know how. It does unfortunately waste a little timber which is the bit I don't like about it.

I might make another one and do a write up of it if folks are interested in learning?

    Cheers,
    Af.
