Default Class Project / Coffee Table

This is my class project for our fall semester.

The finish is "General Finish Water Based Stain (Cranberry) over Cherry wood. Three coats of oil (Minwax Antique Oil Finish) and three coats of wipe on Minwax Polyurethane.

The inlay on the stretcher and drawer handles are Ebony.

    Nice design and excellent finish

You said it was a class project... can you tell us about that?

You are taking classes and this was your project?

Your class worked on it together?

    Cheers,

    Chipman

I'm not sure how the grade/year numbers compare between OZ and US.

After high school (12th year) our students go to work or college (i.e. University). There are two types of public colleges. The Community College system is intended for local students living at home and provides classes covering the first two years of University classes and/or vocational classes. Generally speaking the Community College system is almost always a government supported institution.

The coffee table was built in a "Introduction To Tables" class at a Community College. The class is part of the Fall semester and each student is expected to complete their own project. There is some latitude in the project details. Basically the requirements are a solid wood top, leg and apron style and a drawer. The example that the instructor built was a "Craftsman" style which I wanted to build including bread board ends. HOWEVER the table is a gift and the recipient wanted an oval top. After taking this class I think that I would like, at some time, try to attempt oval bread board ends.

The class was a lot of fun and we had a great instructor. At some point I think that I would like to take a chair building class. Perhaps next Fall...

    Thanks for the information.

I am a Physics/Science teacher at the high school level. This year I was given the chance to teach year 9 Woodwork (14/15 year olds) which I have thoroughly enjoyed and they have asked me to do it again next year.

Chairs are a lot more challenging but by what I have seen of your work, I am sure you will do very well!

    Regards,

    Chipman

Very nice Rich. Lovely finish, and I like the inlay on the ends.

Cranberry stain on cherry wood ... Making me hungry.

    Thanks for the good words.

I'm astounded that there are woodworking programs in schools, anywhere. Here the lawyers have made it almost impossible to have a woodworking program with students less than 18 years of age. The school districts here look at the liability and decide that it is better to give administrators a salary raise rather than fund a woodworking program,
