    Default Coal Hopper for Model Train

    Hi all. THis was my (small) xmas project. A mate is into model steam trains, the type you actually sit on and drive on 5" guage track. He wanted a coal hopper.

    This is 180mm x 150mm x 80mm and is made from 12mm Tas Oak with a Myrtle veneered 3.5mm ply bottom. The top edges are covered with 10mm x 1.6mm brass strap and the inside edges have a 1.5mm chamfer. Its finished to #0000 steel wool and coated with 4 coats of exterior estapol (spray can). Dovetails were cut with my Gifkins Jig. See later post for pics.
    Cheers

    Looks good.

    How deep did you do the dove tails?

    How thick are the sides.

    Dovetails = 12mm
    Sides = 12mm
    cut a 6mm rebate in the base of the 2 long sides and glued and screwed the base on.

    He sure is. He wanted to line it with plastic to protect the interior. I said no. If it gets too daggy I'll do a refinish. He's going to remove some of the seat behind him and the box will sit on a steel frame.

    Nice work. (Thanks for the additional pic's. )

    Your Mate must be a very good friend. I couldn't imagine doing such nice work for something that was going to carry coal. Perhaps the inevitable beating that coal will cause timber could be avoided with a metal liner.
